Late night thoughts :
I feel like when I tell people I’m a doula they automatically think it’s for people who birth at home and while that’s true it’s also true that people who birth in hospitals can and should hire a doula as well. I’ve never attended a home birth ( I would absolutely love to but the opportunity just hasn’t presented itself to me yet)
I personally feel very pulled to help mamas who are birthing in the hospital. I feel like right now in this season, that is the space I’m needed in most. Hospital births may be the only realistic option for some families as most insurances typically fail to cover home births. I also feel that hospitals need to have great experiences with doulas to heal the damage that hospital birth experiences have sustained over the past several decades.
If you are planning to birth at home your likelihood of having unneeded medical interventions is almost none. If you birth in a hospital you’re much more likely to have a cascade of well intended, but perhaps not necessary medical interventions, even if you go into it with a plan of going “ all natural”. I can tell you from experience that good intentions are not enough to get you a natural birth. You need to learn, practice, prepare and have support.
Furthermore there are women who want pain medications and that doesn’t negate your need for support during and after labor.
This is why I love to support a hospital birth and am ready to be a part of changing the norm for hospital births.
Hospital, home, barefoot in the woods; I am here to support any and all birth experiences ❤️
