Q: When should women expect normal menstruation to resume?

It depends on breastfeeding. Without breastfeeding, expect your first period about two months after childbirth. With breastfeeding, periods may resume anytime from two months onward—some women only get periods after stopping breastfeeding. Important: breastfeeding is NOT contraception! Ninety percent of women won't ovulate before their first period, but contraception is essential if sexually active after childbirth.

Q: Am I in labor?

Use the 5:1:1 rule: contractions should be 5 minutes apart (or closer), lasting 1 minute, for 1 hour of timing. If you meet all three criteria, you're probably in early labor. Don't worry about not getting there in time - most women have contractions as close as 2 minutes apart in advanced labor. If your water breaks, go to the hospital within a few hours, even without contractions. When unsure, call Dr. Daum for guidance.

Q: Will I have a miscarriage?

Bleeding in early pregnancy is frightening, but it doesn't usually mean miscarriage. We can check HCG and progesterone levels to monitor your pregnancy's progress. Once we see the baby's heartbeat on ultrasound (around 6.5 weeks), everyone can breathe easier. Most miscarriages happen before 10 weeks and are rare after 12 weeks. Most early miscarriages result from chromosomal abnormalities, not your actions or stress. Have faith - things should go well.

Q: What can I do for nausea and vomiting during pregnancy?

Try these tips:
🔹Remember: any calorie is a good calorie—eat what stays down
🔹Eat six small meals throughout the day
🔹Avoid greasy, fried, or very sweet foods
🔹Drink fluids between meals, not with them
🔹Try dry toast, crackers, or cereal when nauseated
🔹Keep track of triggers
🔹Ask your doctor about anti-nausea medicine
🔹Call your doctor if you can't keep anything down for more than two days.

Q: Is it normal for swelling to occur during pregnancy?

Yes, some swelling (edema) is normal, especially in the legs during the last few months. Elevating your legs usually reduces it by morning. However, let your doctor know if you have swelling in your hands or face - this may indicate another problem. Tips: elevate your legs when possible, rest on your side, avoid tight elastic bands on stockings, and move around regularly if sitting for long periods.

Q: Is it safe to exercise and continue work during pregnancy?

Yes! Exercise can strengthen muscles used in labor and delivery while lessening pregnancy discomforts. If you were active before pregnancy, you can continue within reason—limit exertion to about 2/3 of what you did before. This isn't the time to take up a new, hard sport. Most healthy women with uncomplicated pregnancies can work until the end. Discuss any concerns at your appointments.

Q: Are saunas, hot tubs, and tanning booths safe during pregnancy?

No, we don't recommend saunas, hot tubs, or tanning booths during pregnancy. The extreme temperatures could potentially damage your developing baby. Extremely hot baths should also be avoided - keep bath temperatures below 100°F to protect your baby.

Q: May I travel during pregnancy?

Most women can travel safely until close to their due date. The middle of pregnancy is usually the most comfortable time. Always wear both lap and shoulder belts - the lap belt should sit low on your hips, not over the uterus. On flights over two hours, get up and walk every two hours to prevent blood clots. We recommend no travel in the ninth month and staying within 2-3 hours of home during the eighth month.

Q: What can I do to relieve constipation during pregnancy?

At least half of pregnant women experience constipation. Here's what can help:
🔹Drink 6-8 glasses of water daily, including fruit juice like prune juice
🔹Eat high-fiber foods like raw fruits, vegetables, and bran cereals
🔹Exercise daily-walking is excellent
🔹If needed, skip your prenatal vitamin for a few days (the iron worsens constipation) and try Milk of Magnesia

Q: I have an ovarian cyst. Do I need surgery?

Your ovarian cyst is very likely benign. Most gynecologic surgery aims to improve quality of life, so the decision should be thoroughly discussed. There are usually multiple approaches to each problem. Avoid surgery for small issues, and when larger problems arise, proceed at your own pace. A well-informed patient makes the best choices and will be most satisfied. Talk to your gynecologist about your specific situation.

Q: How should I treat endometriosis?

Treatment depends on your goals. Options include pain management with noncyclic birth control pills, laparoscopic surgery to remove visible endometriosis, or hormone treatments like Lupron. For completed families with recurring pain, hysterectomy may be considered. Treatment should be goal-oriented based on where you are in life. Don't accept only one treatment proposal—explore all your options with your gynecologist.
