The Arctic Reindeer is the only known mammal to undergo a seasonal eye color change to help them adapt to the extreme light conditions of the Arctic!
- In the summer, their eyes are golden letting less light in during those bright sunny days and in the winter, they turn deep blue to let more light in during the dark winter, which enhances their vision in low-light.
- Seeing in UV light helps them spot predators, which appear darker against the UV reflecting snow and see their winter food (lichens), which stand out in UV light.
- They are also excellent at detecting motion, which is crucial for spotting predators in a snowy, open area.

Peek Inside the Eye: this month the Pupil.
The pupil is the black opening in the middle of the colored part of your eye (the iris). Your pupil lets light into your eye, changing its shape, which is controlled by the muscles in your iris. The pupil is protected by the cornea which is the clear dome over the eye that covers the pupil. The conjunctiva, which is a layer of tissue, also protects the pupil and the whole eye. The pupil also gives aqueous humor, a fluid that nourishes the eyes, a pathway to the front of your eye.

“When I was 13, all I wanted was to play soccer without worrying about my glasses. What I didn’t know then was that getting my first pair of contacts would kickstart a lifelong love for eye care.

My favorite part of my job is knowing I’ll see patients I’ve cared for over the years - not just to check their eyes, but to catch up on life. I love the personal connections I’ve built here since I moved in 2015; my patients ask about my family, and I get to share stories about my trips back home to Michigan (even as a Wolverine fan in Buckeye country!).

One patient experience that really stuck with me was helping identify stroke symptoms in time for a patient to get emergency care. It reminded me how powerful this work can be. We not only help people see better; we help them live better.

At Ohio Eye Associates, we focus on what’s best for our patients, always. I’m grateful to be part of a team and a community that values trust, care, and connection above all else.”

Is your eye infection contagious? To determine contagiousness, look for symptoms and know that viral infections can be contagious before symptoms appear, while bacteria infections are contagious as long as there is discharge, increased tearing, and light sensitivity. It is equally important to make an appointment with your eye care doctor and know how to prevent the spreading of your infection.

Conjunctivitis is commonly known as pink eye, an inflammation of the conjunctiva, the clear membrane that covers the white part of the eye and lines the inside of the eyelids. Conjunctivitis can be caused by various factors & treatment depends on the underlying cause.
Bacteria: Most common cause, resulting in a thick, yellow or green discharge. Treated with antibiotic eye drops or ointment.
Viruses: Causes a watery discharge and may be accompanied by other cold/flu-like symptoms. Usually resolves on its own within a few weeks.
Allergies: Watery eyes, itching, and redness. Treated with antihistamine eye drops or nasal sprays that can help relieve symptoms.
Chemical Irritants: Exposure to substances like smoke, contact lenses, or cosmetics can cause irritation. Rinse the eyes thoroughly with clean water.
