Don't Gamble With Your Health.
NO Pain IS Gain! Pain means something.
If you don't know how to stop (HOLD'em) and take care of yourself, or seek help (FOLD'em), know how to take it slow (WALK), or speed up to improve strength and mobility (RUN); Your Place | Physical Therapy and Wellness is here to offer ideas and help.
Our last post (HOLD'em) talked about how to self-treat recent injuries and a reminder to revisit past programs from your Physical Therapist, Chiropractor or other Practitioner for more chronic problems. It emphasized listening to your body, treating what you can with the tools you have (RICE+P= Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation + Protection). Some readers commented on over the counter pain creams and gels that work. We’d agree that Arnica tops our list as well! (use caution and check with your Physician if you take blood thinners).
There are many types of self-care (taking care of yourself!). Evidenced back proven methods are:
Regular activity and exercise, techniques for stress reduction (hitting the bar -Wine or Spirits doesn’t count for stress reduction, so sorry! Studies have found benefits in moderation though.), socialization, quality nutrition and hydration have been found to factor into healthy aging and longevity. In a study called Human longevity: Genetics or Lifestyle? It takes two to tango (Immun Ageing, 2016;13: 12. Published online 2016 Apr 5.) They discuss the interaction that genetics and lifestyle influences have on aging. It is fascinating! I would say it takes three to tango as we cannot forget environmental exposures, injuries and traumatic experiences that create further impact and the need for additional ongoing self-care. Taking care of those nagging injuries, “tolerable” pain, emotional and spiritual pain is a step in the right direction to good health and longevity!
Our next post will focus on who to call when you are out of tools and tricks, and when! If you have questions please give us a call at 509.557.0401.
