The Great Lakes Region of the American Music Therapy Association stands firmly for human dignity, safety, and the well-being of all communities. As healthcare and human service professionals, we affirm that no one should be subjected to violence or dehumanization. We are deeply troubled by the presence of Immigration and Customs Enforcement in our region and by the loss of life associated with immigration enforcement actions. We condemn conduct that instills fear, causes harm, and results in preventable deaths. We denounce the current use of intimidation and force and acknowledge that these actions impede access to healthcare, employment, and education. We call for policies and practices rooted in compassion, accountability, and respect for human rights.

We stand with and support our colleagues and community members who are and are not able to advocate for themselves and their neighbors. For more information on how you can further support and advocate for our colleagues, students, and community members, please review and use the resources at: www.standwithminnesota.com

We are horrified by the brutal deaths of Alex Pretti and Renee Good of Minnesota. Consistent with our professional values as music therapists โ€” and the ethical obligation to respect and protect the safety, dignity, and humanity of all people โ€” we strongly condemn this loss of life and the ongoing trauma inflicted by violent confrontations and instability. Exposure to continued violence and long-term fear not only impacts individuals emotionally and psychologically, but also has profound and lasting consequences for families and communities. We affirm that all people deserve safety and security, dignity, and humane treatment, and that no one should live in fear of harm, discrimination, or violence. AMTA stands with Minnesota and is encouraged by your ongoing advocacy and community involvement. Our larger community can advocate by contacting your legislators to demand meaningful accountability and human rights safety and by supporting StandwithMinnesota.com for a curated list of organizations providing assistance during this time. AMTA is developing resources to support the larger community addressing de-escalation, trauma-informed music therapy, and ethical thinking.
