If this sounds familiar to you, I promise you’re not imagining it, and it’s not just “sensitive digestion.”
Bile is one of the most overlooked pieces of the digestive process, especially for those without a gallbladder or anyone who has been dealing with chronic bloating, heaviness, or that frustrating feeling like food just sits there after you eat. Bile is what helps your body break down fats, move things along, and signal the rest of your digestive system to do its job properly. When that flow is sluggish, everything slows down with it.
This is where bitter herbs come in, and this is something traditional herbalism has understood for a very long time.
Herbs like dandelion root, artichoke leaf, gentian, and milk thistle don’t “force” digestion, they support your body’s natural signaling pathways. Bitters work by stimulating receptors on the tongue that tell your body to start producing digestive juices, stomach acid, enzymes, and bile. This happens before you even take a bite, which is why how and when you take them matters.
If you’re dealing with that heavy, bloated feeling after meals, one of the simplest places to start is supporting that bile flow gently and consistently.
A simple approach:
About 10–15 minutes before eating, take a small amount of a bitter herb preparation (tea or tincture), and let it sit on your tongue for a moment before swallowing. This gives your body the signal it’s been missing.
Even something as simple as a cup of dandelion root tea or a blend that includes artichoke leaf can make a noticeable difference over time when used consistently.
If this is something you’ve been dealing with, save this so you can come back to it, and if you want a deeper breakdown of herbs that specifically support digestion (and how to use them properly), comment digestion and I’ll send it your way.
