Is it "bad behavior"? Or is it trauma?

When a child doesn't have the words to communicate the impact of stress, their nervous system can speak through their behavior. Trauma isn't always a major, obvious, physical incident. It can simply be another word for stress - how the body and nervous system respond when stress feels too big to manage.

At Children's Theraplay, we use a trauma-informed model of occupational and physical therapy to address sensory processing challenges and emotional dysregulation. By understanding how the autonomic nervous system responds to stressors, we can use purposeful games and exercises to facilitate a more optimal, balanced state for learning and play. If your child seems more reactive or sensitive to stress, whether you know what the trigger is or not, talk with your child's therapist. Together we can explore strategies to help your child find support, safety, and regulation.

Is your child ready for kindergarten? Recent research, along with what many therapists observe in practice, raises concerns that children are entering kindergarten without the foundational skills needed for šŸ’« success.

⭐In a 2024 study, educators across the U.S. reported that many kindergarteners are starting school without essential skills (fine motor, social-emotional, and executive functioning).

⭐Demands have changed significantly in the last 50 years, with some calling kindergarten ā€œthe new 1st grade.ā€

⭐A 2011 study found that kids who learned to read at age 5 showed no long-term advantage over those who learned at age 7, and that later readers demonstrated stronger reading skills by age 10.

⭐Ensuring that children have fundamental academic, cognitive, motor, and social skills when they enter kindergarten will ultimately prepare them to be successful throughout their lives.

If you have concerns about your child's kindergarten readiness, contact your local school district for an early childhood screening. Our therapists are able to support age-appropriate development as well!

Why does it matter?

Flexible soles allow for natural movement and muscle development.

Wide toe box mimics the foot's natural shape and gives toes room to spread out and wiggle.

Deep rubber treads provide grip on snow and ice.

Straps can be adjusted to get a just-right fit.

Promote independence with dressing by finding shoes your child can put on themselves.
