Comfrey is a bushy, perennial with large, hairy leaves and delicate bell-shaped, purplish flowers. It is a must have plant for your survival tool kit. Not only is it easy to grow but it’s incredibly valuable for both medicine and as a free fertilizer for the garden.

Comfrey is historically known as knit bone and was used in folk medicine as a poultice for broken bones and torn cartilage. It has also gained popularity in permaculture where it is grown to improve the fertility of soil by providing material for a nutritious compost tea that adds nitrogen to depleted soil.

In herbal medicine the roots and leaves are often infused into oil for topical use to heal cuts, burns and even broken bones. It contains compounds that stimulates new tissue growth and relieve pain and inflammation. Although the plant can be ingested to help mend bones and cartilage it does come with some caution and shouldn’t be taken for extended periods of time.

Cleavers is a common "w**d."' I like to consider it a wildflower that is edible and medicinal. Cleavers are rich in vitamins and minerals, including silica, chlorophyl, and flavonoids. It is a traditional spring tonic used to detoxify, treat swelling, and relieve water retention. A tea rewed from it can also be applied topically for skin irritations and inflammation. Cleavers is my favorite herb to flush the lymphatic system and support the immune system. It is excellent for improving lymph flow to help flush out toxins, decrease congestion, and reduce sweling in the lymphnodes.. Cleavers also support the kidneys and bladder during infections by acting as a diuretic. Young leaves can be juiced, used in smoothies, or brewed into.tea. This harvest will be used to make our Cleavers Herbal liquid extract.

What am I harvesting in my garden this week? Wild Violets, violets are a common sight in lawns, gardens, and sidewalk cracks this time of year. Violet leaves and flowers are edible and medicinal. RICH in vitamins A, C, calcium, magnesium, salicylic acid, and soulable fiber, they are anti-inflammatory. When taken internally, they soothe coughs, bronchitis, sore throats, move stagnant lymph, reduce lymph node swelling, aid circulation, relieve joint pain, and restore healthy intestinal flora. Topically, an infused oil made from leaves and flowers can help eczema, dry skin,acne, and bruises. The leaves are highly nutritious, and flowers are a sweet, colorful addition to salads or made into tea and as a lovely garnish. Violet flowers can be candied for decorating desserts! My favorite is Voilet flower syrup for medicinal and culinary use. Stay tuned for my favorite recipe for making your own Violet flower surup.
