It’s AAC Awareness Month! Have you seen the communication board ? This month we’re going to be highlighting our communication boards found around Marblehead and sharing some quick tips!

First we’ll start with answering our most common question -

🌟 “What’s a communication board?” 🌟

A communication board is a tool that helps children share and connect by using pictures and words that can be pointed to instead of (or along with) talking.

When you see one at a playground, library, or park, it’s there to make sure everyone can join in the fun! Whether a child uses words, gestures, or a device, communication boards help them ask for a turn, say “let’s play!”, or share how they feel.

They remind us that there are many ways to communicate and all of them are valid!

Come join Joann Sorg, occupational therapist from , as she hosts a casual meetup for kids who have a shared interest - Art! Feel free to bring your favorite arts and crafts materials or projects if you want to share, or just show up and explore some new materials with other creative kids!

The monthly Hangout Hub is a chance to meet, play and hang out with others who share similar interests, developing friendship skills and giving kids opportunities to share something they love to do. Each class will offer accommodations that support all learning and interaction styles. The age range for this meetup is 6-10.

October is AAC Awareness Month 💬✨

What is AAC?
AAC stands for Augmentative and Alternative Communication. It includes any tool or strategy that helps someone communicate besides spoken words- like sign language, picture boards, speech-generating devices, or writing.

Who uses AAC?
Anyone! AAC can support children and adults who are autistic, non-speaking, have apraxia, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, or even those who temporarily lose speech.

Does AAC stop someone from learning to talk?
No! Research shows AAC supports speech and language development. It gives people a way to communicate right now, while also helping them grow their skills.

Why is AAC important?
Because every voice matters. Respecting all forms of communication means honoring gestures, signs, devices, and words equally. 🧡

This month (and always), let’s honor and celebrate all the ways people express themself!
