Have you heard of a Slate Gray Nevus? Slate Gray Nevi are a type of pigmented birthmark found on many newborns, most often located on the lower back and buttocks. The spots occurs due to entrapment of melanocytes (pigment cells) in the dermis of the developing embryo, when the cells have failed to reach their proper location in the epidermis.

This birthmark is most common in infants of East Asian, Polynesian, Indonesian, and Native North and Central American decent. Slate Gray Nevi were previously referred to as Mongolian blue spots, however, this title is considered inappropriate and outdated and should no longer be used in the medical or newborn care community.

The marks are often present at birth but may also appear during the first weeks of life. They usually disappear by the about age 4, but they can remain into adulthood.

While seeing a birthmark that resembles a bruise can be startling to some new parents, its important to know that, most importantly, this birthmark is completely normal, totally harmless, and causes your little one no pain! The more you know!

🍼 Mother's milk may be offering protective benefits even before birth!

Human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs) are complex, non-digestible human specific glycans that constitute the third-largest group of macromolecules in human milk, after lactose and lipids. The concentration of HMOs depends on the stage of lactation, being highest in colostrum and then dropping as milk matures.

HMOs have many health-promoting effects on the infant. Their prebiotic and antimicrobial effects might mitigate the risk of infections of the gastrointestinal, respiratory, and urinary tracts in term and preterm infants.

Specific HMOs are thought to prevent the development of necrotizing enterocolitis, one of the most common and serious comorbidities in very-low-birth-weight preterm infants. Animal studies have suggested that HMOs may also promote neuronal and brain development and might have long-lasting effects on the development of cognitive functions. Several studies have also suggested HMO effects on intestinal barrier function, mucosal immune maturation, and neonatal intestinal development.

Increasing evidence shows that the occurrence of HMOs is not limited to human milk and lactation. Studies have shown HMOs are already produced during pregnancy and are circulating in the maternal blood as early as the first trimester. While their potential roles in pregnancy remain elusive, these studies suggest varying protective effects of HMOs on mother and fetus, aligning with the effects of HMOs in breast milk on the nursing infant.

😨 The broken pieces embedded in the woman's uterine wall and now needs to be removed surgically!

Unfortunately, this is just one thing on a long list of side effects from both copper and non-hormonal IUDs. And while rare, is it worth the risk??

This is NOT an exhaustive list by any means, but other possible side effects of IUDs include:
♦️ Heavy Bleeding
♦️ Foul vaginal discharge
♦️ Infections
♦️ Abdominal cramps
♦️ Spotting bleeding
♦️ Prolonged bleeding
♦️ Irregular bleeding
♦️ Perforation of the uterus
♦️ IUD explusion

When choosing the right birth control for you, do thorough research to make an educated decision on what's right for YOU and YOUR BODY without influence of anyone else.

Say no to hormonal and mechanical contraception... there are other safe, effective options!
♦️ Fertility Awareness Methods (FAMs)
♦️ Condoms
♦️ Withdrawal Method
♦️ Diaphragm/Cervical Cap
♦️ Vasectomy, Tubal Ligation, or Hysterectomy
