⫸The stories we tell ourselves about ourselves are a POWERFUL force.

After all, they’re the water we swim in. 🏊🏼‍♀️

They’re the filter through which we’re viewing the world and everything that happens in it.

Naturally, if we see ourselves in a certain way, we’re going to act out that role in our day-to-day.

⫸If I see myself as a strong person 💪🏼, I’m more likely to act in ways that align with that belief: by going to the gym, by standing up for my personal boundaries, by persisting through struggles, and so forth.

⫸If I see myself as weak person, I’m more likely to let circumstances push me around to reaffirm that belief: I’m going to wake up too late to go to the gym, I’m going to say “yes” to a coworker when there’s already too much on my plate, I’m going to give up sooner.

On any given day, you might find you struggle with habits because you’re too tired or busy or overwhelmed or hundreds of other reasons.

But what it boils down to is that you’re attached to a certain version of yourself.
A story you have about who you are.
YES - even if you don’t like that version!

Change is hard because it is uncertain.

The kicker? We’d rather be certain that we’re right about who we are than risk the discomfort of new terrain that comes with a different behavior. (Read that again.)

And until you de-fog the mirror and identify those stories, you will continue to repeat the he same old patterns.

⫸Want to know the beautiful thing about stories?

They’re fluid.
Dynamic.
A new chapter can begin.

⫸My advice?
Learn your stories in and out.
Learn to spot them and then *gently* call them out to yourself.
“Ah - how human of me”
“There I go again living out that old story.”

THEN can you start the unlearning. Then you can make powerful shifts in the story you write.

Each action you take is a line in the new story you’re writing about yourself.

No one instance will transform how you see yourself,

but as you build up consistency, your new identity grows stronger.

⫸What are some old stories that you have about yourself that have worn out their usefulness?

⫸What new story would you like to live into?

Please share below - I’d love to hear from you! 👇🏼

⫸About the Logo

The Sri Yantra is an ancient Hindu symbol.

I’ve been drawn to Hindu philosophy since I was a teenager - learning about Chakras during my very first yoga class at the YMCA, and then going on to study to be a yoga teacher in India in my twenties.

Like most all of Hindu words and symbols, it has thousands of meanings. {Food for thought: The same could be said about any language.} 🤔

The meaning that resonates with me is the balance and harmony between Doing and Being.

⫸The upward-pointing arrows represent the masculine, or Doing, Yang, action-oriented energy. This is the energy necessary to make things happen in this world.

⫸The downward-pointing arrows represent the feminine, or Being, Yin, grounding-oriented energy. This is the energy necessary to reflect, create, and regenerate.

⫸The two arrows coalesce toward one another in the center - becoming more and more intertwined.

Integrating these states of Being and Doing is one of my primary goals as a habit coach and is a core tenet of The Ritual Movement. To build inner compassion and self-trust by creating alignment between action and intent.

As a culture, we’ve bought into the “rat race” - of doing for the sake of doing. Of glorifying busy-ness and productivity. Of keeping up with someone else’s expectations of us. This often leads to disconnection from self, burnout, and dis-ease.

My aim as a coach and a teacher is to guide you inward so you can listen, acknowledge, and apply your body’s wisdom to your daily doings. To uncover what blind spots you might have conditioned and tap into your true intentions. To turn up the volume of your own authentic voice and become your own healer.

If you’ve found yourself feeling stuck in a habit loop and disconnected, you’re not alone. If you’d like to learn more about The Ritual Movement or my coaching services, feel free as a bird 🦅 to explore the Linktree in my bio or reach out with a DM. 🤍

⫸DEEP exhale. 🌬

In case you forgot…

Nobody has this all figured out. Nobody.

And at the same time, an intelligence beyond our mentalizing - beyond our conceptual understanding - hums deep within it all.

Within YOU. 🧅

⫸Will you get quiet enough to hear it?
⫸Will you release the notion that you need to “get it right?”
⫸Will you surrender to life orchestrating on your behalf?
⫸Will you open yourself up to the heart-shattering joy that is this miracle of existence? 💔

As for me? Sometimes. More and more these days.

Especially in the tenderest of moments where I forget myself. Where I let the boundaries between you and me dissolve into sweet v***r.

Inviting more moments like these, please. 🙏🏼

There are no more maps 🗺, no more creeds, no more philosophies.

From here on in, the directions come straight from the Divine. ✨

The curriculum is being revealed...

Millisecond by millisecond - invisibly, intuitively, spontaneously, lovingly. 🖤

As one of Thomas Merton's monks has it,
"Go into your 𝙘𝙚𝙡𝙡, and your cell will teach you everything there is to know."

Your cell... 𝙔𝙤𝙪𝙧𝙨𝙚𝙡𝙛.

Picture this: It’s 6pm on a Friday, and you’re out to dinner with friends.

You’d promised yourself you’d stick to an eating plan, yet suddenly you find yourself up to your eyeballs in pizza and cocktails. Having an AMAZING time, I might add. Why wouldn’t you be?

Then. Suddenly. The SHAME SPIRAL begins!

You’re sipping on your long island iced tea and saying things to yourself like:

⫸I shouldn’t be doing this.
⫸I’m never going to lose those 15 pounds.
⫸How do I always fall for Cheryl’s damn peer pressure!
⫸Why can’t I just stick to my frickin’ goals?!
⫸Did these pants get smaller?
⫸I guess this is my life now.

We’ve ALL been there.

Hurling all sorts of “shoulds” and insults at ourselves.

Making universal, blanket statements about our overall abilities, qualities, and general not-enoughness. Speaking to ourselves in ways we’d never tolerate from others, I might add!

Next time you fall off the goal wagon for a moment, what if you tried something different?

What if you let yourself get CURIOUS instead?

You might ask yourself questions like:

⫸What needs are being met by this pizza? Physical and emotional.
⫸Was this more about a craving to satisfy hunger or to fit in with the group?
⫸When have I been successful at sticking to my goals in the past?
⫸What could I have done to help better prepare me for this moment?
⫸What do I stand to gain by NOT reaching my goals? (ooch that’s a rough one!)
⫸Where does this feeling of shame come from?
⫸Where do I feel it in my body? And what does it feel like?
⫸Is my worthiness as a human being based on my weight? Or to stick to goals?
⫸Who would I be if I didn’t carry this shame? What would life be like?

When we open our minds and our hearts to curiosity, we reconnect to what our needs and desires are.

As a result, we experience a brand new capacity to love ourselves.

There’s a quality of authenticity in our caring, which redirects our attention to our self-care. This arises intrinsically and spontaneously ... not as a response to a “should.”

So thanks, Cheryl, for this opportunity to know myself more fully.

Love,
Rae

P.S. For coaching on shifting your habits while practicing compassionate curiosity, DM me!

So often we think of willpower as being the end-all-be-all when it comes to self-control.

However, the research states that this is simply not the case.

During my time as a psychological scientist, I was consistently drawn to the topic of self-control. I’d always have questions like:

⫸Why do some people succeed at reaching their goals while others fail?
⫸What role does the situation/circumstance play in people’s self-control?
⫸How do people balance goals that conflict with one another?

And what I learned through my research and through coaching clients is that people with the best self-control tend to avoid creating situations in which their goals would conflict with one another in the first place. This ultimately leads to them expending less willpower moment to moment.

For example, someone who has a goal to eat less sugar would avoid walking down the baked goods aisle at the grocery store. 🍰 Or if they are going to a party where they know a cake will be served, they will fill up on healthy protein ahead of time and/or bring a healthier dessert to enjoy and share.

So perhaps rather than beat yourself up because you didn’t have the willpower turn down that drink at the work party 🥃 or stick to your daily writing goal ✍️ - I invite you to use this experience as an opportunity to ask yourself:

⫸What could I do next time to make this situation easier for me to choose the habit in alignment with my goal?

Some ideas for creating/breaking a habit from James Clear, author of “Atomic Habits” 💣

⫸Make it obvious/invisible
⫸Make it attractive/unattractive
⫸Make it easy/difficult
⫸Make it satisfying/unsatisfying

You can read more about my research by clicking on the link in my bio ☝🏼

For coaching on ways to practice better self-control and form habits in alignment with your true potential, please feel free as a 🦅 to DM me!

From my perspective, each choice we make is a direct reflection of the amount of love we have for ourselves. A vote for the person we believe ourselves to be, in that moment.

When we take exquisite care of our bodymind by:

⫸Choosing delicious, regenerative foods that nourish
⫸Eating slowly, with gratitude and mindfulness
⫸Resting deeply for 7+ hours each night
⫸Drinking pure water, preferably from a spring
⫸Being mindful of what we read, watch, and listen to
⫸Honoring our cycles (sleep, hormonal, seasonal)
⫸Feeding our curiosity and creativity
⫸Belly laughing
⫸Developing patience and forgiveness
⫸Moving and sweating with purpose and joy
⫸Cultivating kindness
⫸Having passionate s*x
⫸Developing self-awareness by journaling, meditating, and meaningful conversations
⫸Taking time for deep, diaphragmatic breathing
⫸Honoring our boundaries and those of others
⫸Daily immersion in nature - recharging with the earth’s frequency and breathing our biome
⫸Putting down your phone and taking breaks from screens as often as possible
⫸Expressing love to yourself and others
⫸Creating and contributing our potential within our communities

When we commit to any one of these acts, we send out a powerful signal that we respect and love ourselves. Love yields more love, and gives others permission to love themselves as well.

Want support finding that love within yourself and implementing practical habits? DM or follow the link in my bio for info on 1:1 coaching 🤍

Simple math, yes or no?

Maybe simple, but not easy. Some qualifiers for this algorithm below:

⫸AWARENESS
“Know thyself,” the old adage goes.

Being aware of our underlying needs, wants, triggers, dreams, fears, and patterns takes a great deal of practice. It takes getting quiet and still, and listening.

It also takes getting out there on the court and watching the effects of our actions.

There are a couple different styles of awareness. One is as an observer. Where you can zoom out and look at yourself as you might another person, with greater objectivity. Where you can also zoom way in and feel into the tiny recesses of your body, and notice each sensation with curiosity and awe. Where you recognize that none of this is yours or you, per se. That you are, at your very core, Loving Awareness.

Another style is through a filter of fear and resistance, where you might label experiences as bad or wrong, and you push them away. A form of self-rejection, in essence. Where your view is temporarily small and rigid and narrow. This is not so much an act of awareness as it is a survival mechanism. An act of control and vigilance to protect you from perceived threat.

The beautiful part, to me, is that you can step into the first form of awareness and view these survival reactions from a place of compassion. Noticing them. Thanking them for protecting you. You can come right back to loving awareness within a single breath.

⫸ALIGNED ACTION
Awareness all on its own is a powerful place to stand.

However, when you infuse your thoughts and behaviors with the truths you learn by knowing yourself, THAT’S where the magic happens! That’s where you take your unique fingerprint - the DNA of your own truth, never before seen/never to be seen again - and you alchemize and transform the world around you.

We are more powerful than we could ever comprehend. And our actions are consistently informed by some motivation, conscious or otherwise.

The two fundamental motivations, from my perspective, are love and fear. When you act from fear, this is just the soft animal in you trying to survive. This can look like habit loops, addiction, and an overall feeling of being stuck in a rut or out of control. At the effect of life.

When we tune into our own loving awareness, this creates the bedrock for authentic self-expression. For interacting with ourselves and the world in a way that feels truer to our core essence. A sense of life working for you. That you are one with life.

This is something you can’t fake. You can’t bypass the survival mechanism of fear bubbling up in your gut to emulate “good vibes only.” What you resist persists, and your actions won’t resonate with the truth of your experience. When you honor all of our truths, even when you see them as “bad,” “ugly,” or “wrong,” it gives permission for everyone around you to do the same. And, miraculously, it transforms the fear to love. It brings light to the darkness.

⫸WORTHINESS
Let me start with this: You are INHERENTLY worthy.

Worthiness is not “earned” as many religious ideologies, school systems, industrialistic society, and many of your parents might program you to believe.

No matter what you’ve done/didn’t do. No matter what ra**ch floats through your mind. No matter if you’re a millionaire or if you’re living with your parents in your 40s. No matter if you’re single or married. No matter if you’re a criminal or a saint. You are as worthy of spinning around on this rock in the sky as everyone else. You are a fu***ng MIRACLE.

Now let me be clear: This doesn’t mean your BEHAVIOR isn’t immune to consequences or to judgment. Cause and effect is part of our reality. But you, your character, your being, who you are at your divine human core, are WORTHY, my friend. Of forgiveness. Of happiness. Of abundance. Of the freedom to be exactly who you are. Of playing your part… full out… in this miracle called Life!

What I’m speaking to in this little equation here, is your own sense of self-worth. Your relationship to worthiness at any given moment. The extent to which you can tap into this inherent badassery that I describe above.

This sense of worthiness built.

And one way I’d posit we build it is by knowing ourselves and by applying that awareness to our actions. Creating space to see and acknowledge ourselves, listen to our truths with compassion, and apply that awareness to our actions with the utmost integrity.

And strangely enough, your behavior tends to fall in line with this sense of self-worth. What you’re aware of confirms it. The equation feeds back into itself.

And it is all a cycle of learning, and love, and transformation.

Thank you, family. I love you and I hope this is of service to you.
