Do you have core dysfunction?? Do you know that your core is the axis of rotation for your limbs? Your chronic nagging shoulder pain could actually be the result of a weak and dysfunctional core! Many people actually have some type of core dysfunction but don't even realize it. In our world of desk jockying, iPhones, iPads, Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, stress, and lack of movement, core dysfunction is widespread! Pregnant and postpartum women aren't the only ones who benefit from functional progressions and core work!

Symptoms Include:
Chest Breathing
Shoulder Pain
Diastasis Recti (can occur in anyone)
Knee or lower extremity pain
Pelvic Dysfunction
Strength in one plane

The first step in correcting core dysfunction is regulating your breath! Do you practice the diaphragmatic breath? Can you properly abdominally brace (without sucking your belly button to your spine?) Check out this awesome video from the BIRTHFIT team on how to breathe with your diaphragm and give it a shot! Is it hard? If the answer is yes, keep practicing!

Are you ready to feed your baby? What about first asking if your baby is ready to eat? I pureed something once when I was pregnant for the first time, and decided I wouldn’t be doing that on a regular basis. Β It was an incredibly time-consuming process, and it didn’t seem necessary

I shared this link about crawling to my CF gym earlier this morning, but it gives a good explanation of why crawling is a great addition to your workout routine or warmup!

There’s growing evidence that crawling – one of the most basic developmental movement patterns – has surprising physical and mental benefits for adults as well.

What is Fascia?πŸ€”
Fascia is the continuous biologic fabric that holds all 70 trillion cells of each person together, while keeping each organ or body part in its proper location. There are two layers of fascia: the superficial layer that lies just below the skins surface and is connected to the skin through ligaments, and the deep layer which is an intricate network that separates and envelopes muscles, forms passageways and sheaths for blood vessels and nerves, and strengthens ligaments around joints. Both layers of fascia are rich with nerves and may cause pain if injured through a trauma/injury, surgical procedure or due to inflammation. Fascia actually has between six to ten times more sensory nerve receptors than muscles do! Fasica also helps your body know where it is in space, which is called proprioception and is essential for you move properly.

So why is it important? πŸ€“
Our mobility, integrity, and resilience are determined in part, by how well hydrated our fascia is. Movement helps to maintain healthy fascia as well as to hydrate body tissues because fascia also serves as a tensional fluid system. The entire body is connected! That necessary movement however, needs to be VARIED in both the type of activity as well as the tempo of activity, which is why HIIT training is so effective. πŸš΄β€β™‚οΈπŸ‹οΈβ€β™€οΈβ›ΉοΈβ€β™€οΈπŸŠβ€β™€οΈπŸŒοΈβ€β™‚οΈπŸ§—β€β™‚οΈπŸƒβ€β™€οΈ
For example, when you run with healthy fascia the force you transmit into the ground gets returned to you through the whole tensional network of the fascia.

This is just the tip of the iceberg of fascia! Keeping it healthy is crucial to proper movement patterns and ultimately life! πŸ˜€

Did you know, when in a neutral ideal posture your head weighs about 10-12 lbs? But the further you lean your head forward or look down, the more the weight of your head is displaced on your neck and ultimately on the rest of your spine.
πŸ‘‰ At just 15 degrees of forward head posture, it places 27lbs of pressure on your cervical spine.
πŸ‘‰ At 30 degrees of forward head posture, it places 40lbs of pressure on your cervical spine.
πŸ‘‰ At 45 degrees of forward head posture, it places 49lbs of pressure on your cervical spine.
πŸ‘‰ At 60 degrees of forward head posture, it places 60lbs of pressure on your cervical spine.

Posture is important! Your structure helps to determine your function. On average we spend 2-4 hours per day bent over our electronics, cumulatively that equals 700-1400 hours per year in a strained posture. Students may even spend an additional 5000 hours per year in that strained forward head posture. Take at look at those around you, what position is their head and neck in? What position is your head and neck in? πŸ€”πŸ™‚πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ

Stand up, walk a lap, and take a deep belly breath! πŸ˜ƒ
