Gout in Feet

Gout is an inflammatory condition that is very painful. It usually affects one joint at a time. In the feet the most common joint is the Big toe joint. When symptoms are worse it is known as acute attack, and times when there are no symptoms it is known as remission. Pain and swelling occur when too much uric acid crystallizes and deposits in the joints. Gout Flare up usually presents as a red, swollen and warm joint. The pain is pretty severe, touching the joint or moving the joint can create extreme pain. If this occurs it is best to go see a Podiatrist to confirm the diagnosis. Tendon injury, Osteoarthritis, Bunion, Fracture can have similar symptoms. Treatments for gout can include steroid injection and oral medication. Patients with chronic gout can use behavioral modification such as diet, exercise, and decreased intake of alcohol to help minimize the frequency of attacks. Food such as Milk, cherries, coffee and water help after a gouty attack. Education on low purine food to avoid flare ups are important as well. A low purine diet is important since purine in our foods breaks down into uric acid in our bodies, hence reducing purine intake helps reduce uric acid levels and avoids gouty attacks. Some foods that make gout worse are Alcohol, red meat, seafood, surgery drinks and sweets. Food groups of fruits and vegetables, grains, nuts. Please see your local doctor to be diagnosed and receive the proper treatment plan.

Diabetic Foot Care

Diabetes can be dangerous to your feet—even a small cut can produce serious consequences. Diabetes may cause nerve damage that takes away the feeling in your feet. Diabetes may also reduce blood flow to the feet, making it harder to heal an injury or resist infection. Because of these problems, you may not notice a foreign object in your shoe. As a result, you could develop a blister or a sore. This could lead to an infection or a nonhealing wound that could put you at risk for an amputation.
To avoid serious foot problems that could result in losing a toe, foot or leg, follow these guidelines.
Inspect your feet daily. Check for cuts, blisters, redness, swelling or nail problems. Use a magnifying hand mirror to look at the bottom of your feet. Call your doctor if you notice anything.

Bathe feet in lukewarm, never hot, water. Keep your feet clean by washing them daily. Use only lukewarm water—the temperature you would use on a newborn baby.

Moisturize your feet but not between your toes. Use a moisturizer daily to keep dry skin from itching or cracking. But don’t moisturize between the toes—that could encourage a fungal infection.

Be Careful with Nails and Corns/ Calluses. Consult your doctor for concerns with toenails or hard surfaces on your feet.

Wear clean, dry socks. Change them daily.

Why Do Ingrown Toenails Form?
Ingrown toenails can form when the side of a toenail begins to grow into the flesh surrounding the nail. As a result, the affected toe—most commonly the big toe—may become red, swollen, painful, and often times infected.

There are many reasons why an ingrown toenail may develop. Improperly cutting your toenails is a major cause of ingrown toenails followed by narrow shoes and hereditary factors. Injuring the toe by stubbing it or having an object fall on it may also lead to ingrown toenails. If left untreated, an ingrown toenail can lead to further complications with the foot.
