James Barnes Rambo age 73 of Holly Springs, Mississippi,
passed away peacefully at home on October 26, 2025.

Jim was the son of the late Albert Loton Rambo and Mary
Brawner Rambo of Marietta, GA. He is survived by his spouse
Peter Nichol of Holly Springs, MS, brother Bert Rambo of
Larkspur, CO, sister Martha Rambo Wyatt and brother-in-law
Chuck Wyatt of Franklin, NC, nephew Clay Wyatt of Boulder, CO,
niece Brooke Wyatt Welbourn and husband Brian Welbourn of
Cu***ng, GA, great nephew Grady Welbourn and great niece
Charlie Welbourn of Cu***ng, GA, aunt Sue Rambo of
Kennesaw, GA, best friend Eddie Wilson of Marietta, GA, and a
multitude of cousins living in Georgia and Florida.

Jim was a long-time resident of Marietta. He graduated from
Marietta High School in 1970 where he played center for the
varsity football team. He earned a football scholarship to East
Tennessee State University and played center for four years,
graduating with a degree in finance.

A man of many talents and interests including a passion for
aviation, Jim became a flight instructor, charter pilot and corporate
pilot for a variety of Atlanta based organizations. He later became
part owner of Rambo Sales in Marietta, often flying his beloved
Beechcraft Bonanza to out-of-state appointments. Jim enjoyed
biking, hiking, camping and photography.

Jim loved his family, rarely missing a gathering and making each
Christmas fun with his practical gifts (phone chargers, light
dimmers, flashlights) typically wrapped in newspaper. He helped
plan family celebrations and attended many sporting events,
parties and graduations for his niece and nephew. He was also a
best friend and primary care partner to his parents, Al and Mary
Rambo, especially in their later years. His support for their
wellbeing was unwavering. Jim was loved by all.

Having met in 1993, Jim and Peter moved together to a rural
Mississippi farmstead in 2021where they continued to enjoy travel
and adventure by land, air and sea. It is here where Jim spent his
final years embraced by the love of his devoted companion and in
the company of their three dogs. You will be dearly missed Bo-Bo.
Fly high.

A gathering of family and friends will be planned for a later
date. Mayes Ward Dobbins Funeral Home will oversee the

๐–๐ก๐จ ๐ฐ๐š๐ฌ ๐๐š๐ฃ๐ฃ๐š๐ซ?

Last week's post on the Marietta Square fire of 1930 had several people asking: ๐˜ž๐˜ฉ๐˜ฐ ๐˜ธ๐˜ข๐˜ด ๐˜•๐˜ข๐˜ซ๐˜ซ๐˜ข๐˜ณ?

That's not a name we often hear when one thinks of "๐’ช๐“๐’น โ„ณ๐’ถ๐“‡๐’พ๐‘’๐“‰๐“‰๐’ถ", however I think it is important to answer that question.

Mr. Kalil "Charles" Najjar was a Syrian immigrant who entered the United States on October 22, 1906 through the port of New York, NY on the SS La Gascogne.

Before settling in Marietta, the Najjar family operated a furniture store in Atlanta. They later moved to downtown Marietta, where they lived on Cherokee Street for many years. Their department store was originally located on North Park Square, but after the devastating 1930 fire, they relocated to West Park Square and continued operating there for several years. 3 of their 6 children were born in Marietta and attended Marietta High School.

In his later years, Mr. Najjar resided in Atlanta and died on May 15th, 1971. He is buried in Westview Cemetery.

I wonder what life was like for the Najjar family in Marietta. As immigrant Byzantine Catholicsโ€”very different from Roman Catholicsโ€”they lived in the Bible Belt, navigating both cultural and religious differences.

According to Dr. Scottโ€™s book "Cobb County, Georgia and the Origins of the Suburban South: A Twentieth Century History", the Najjars were threatened by the Ku Klux Klan. At one point, small coffins were left for them. One of their sons was loaned a gun by none other than Rip Blair, a gesture of solidarity that speaks volumes. The coffins, once symbols of intimidation, were used for target practice on the front lawn of their Cherokee Street home. I like to believe Mr. Blairโ€™s support reflected a broader truth: that many in the community stood with the Najjars, rather than against them.

Mr. Najjar, you are someone I wish I could step through time and speak to.

๐Ÿ”ฅ Najjarโ€™s Fire: A Night Marietta Square Nearly Burned Down

๐ŸŽƒ Halloween on the Marietta Square is often remembered for the tragic gas explosion at Atherton Drug Company in 1963, which claimed 7 lives and injured 23 others. But did you know that 33 years earlier, in 1930, a fire nearly consumed the entire Square?

In the early morning hours of October 30, 1930, smoke poured from the second floor of Najjarโ€™s Department Storeโ€”just after 1:30 a.m. Within minutes, flames leapt west to Florenceโ€™s and north to Dunnโ€™s Feed and Grocery. Gale-force winds hurled burning debris across Glover Park, threatening to engulf the entire Square.

Mariettaโ€™s volunteer firefighters fought valiantly, but they were outmatched. Mayor Tom Brumby called for help from Atlanta. As reinforcements arrived, volunteer firefighter Mayes Ward entered Schillingโ€™s Hardware to stop the spread. The floor collapsed beneath him, dropping him into what witnesses called โ€œa fiery pit.โ€ Jim Palmer, an African-American volunteer, dove in after him and pulled him to safety. Marietta citizens took up a collection for Mr. Palmer as a reward for his action in rescuing Mr. Ward.

By dawn on Halloween morning, the blaze was finally contained. Half of the north side of the Square was destroyed. Only Hodgeโ€™s Drugstore survived intact. The devastated lots remained vacant for five yearsโ€”until the Strand Theater rose from the ashes in 1935.

In all, the fire destroyed $250,000 worth of property and buildingsโ€”a staggering loss in the midst of the Great Depression. That dollar amount is equivalent to $4.85 million today...

Obituary for Lynn Holladay Bagley...MHS Class of 1976

Lynn Holladay Bagley of Chattanooga, TN, was joyfully reunited with her Savior on October 25, 2025, at the age of 67, surrounded by love at home after a courageous battle with metastatic breast cancer.

Born on January 20, 1958, in Marietta, GA, to Dr. Edward and Betsy Lee Holladay, Lynn was the radiant middle child of five siblings. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Jack, her father-in-law, two nephews, and many beloved aunts and uncles.

Lynnโ€™s legacy lives on in the hearts of her devoted husband of 41 years, Tom Bagley; her children Katy Barrett (Matt), Owen Bagley (Lauren), and William Bagley (Rebecca); and her cherished grandchildren Bea and Jake Barrett; Tommy, Annie, and soon-to-arrive Stevie Bagley; and Renna Bagley. She is also survived by her siblings Neill Blake (Bill), Carol Griggs (Greg), Bill Holladay (Luanne), Lora Holladay, and Lee Ann Dawkins (Harold); her lifelong best friend Amy Bull; the Burke family; and a host of nieces, nephews, and dear friends.

Lynnโ€™s light shone brightly from a young age. Known for her wit and warmth, she was voted โ€œWittiestโ€ at Marietta High School and famously joined the kazoo cheerleading squad for the soccer team. Her faith, nurtured at First Presbyterian Church of Marietta, guided her throughout her life. She earned a degree in religious studies from Converse College and a Master of Divinity from Columbia Theological Seminary, where she met Tom, the love of her life.

Together, they began their ministry at Timberridge Presbyterian Church in McDonough, GA. Lynn redefined the role of a pastorโ€™s wife, leading youth with compassion, humor, and an uncanny ability to connect with even the most reserved teenagers. Her impact on young lives was profound and lasting.

Driven by a deep desire to help others, Lynn later earned licensure as a Marriage and Family Therapist. Her gift for listening to and guiding others helped countless people find healing and hope. Her own family and friends were often the grateful recipients of her wisdom, empathy, and practical adviceโ€”tools they now carry forward in her honor.

Lynnโ€™s joy was contagious. She was a masterful card player, a spirited hiker and runner, and a proud participant in the annual mother-daughter half marathon in Savannah for 11 consecutive years. She treasured time at the Bagley lake house, where laughter, games, and late-night chats filled the air. Her greatest delight was her familyโ€”her husband, children, grandchildren, and lifelong friendsโ€”who were the center of her world.

Her heart for mission work, especially crisis counseling in Haiti, reflected her unwavering commitment to serving others. Lynnโ€™s life was a testament to grace, humor, and unconditional love.

We will miss her sage advice, her calming presence, her spontaneous song lyrics, her love of play, and her quick wit. But most of all, we will miss the extraordinary woman who was our wife, mother, Yaya, friend, godmother, mentor, therapist, and comedian.

A Celebration of Life and Witness to the Resurrection will be held Wednesday, October 29 at 2 pm at First Presbyterian Church of Marietta, Georgia with a Graveside service to be held the day before, Tuesday, October 28 at 2 pm at Rose Hill Cemetery in Fayetteville, Tennessee.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Friends of Momance (Haiti), First Presbyterian Church of Fayetteville, Tennessee, or First Presbyterian Church of Marietta, Georgia.

Chris Robert Savage Obituary....MHS Class of 1969

Chris Robert Savage of Marietta, Georgia, was born on May 29, 1951, and on October 24, 2025, he passed away peacefully following a long fight with cancer.

Chris was a proud graduate of the University of Georgia. He was also proud of his 37-year career at Lockheed Martin. As his family and friends know too well, Chris liked to stay busy, and in the years following his retirement, Chris lived the retired life with great enthusiasm! He loved spending time with his wife, Cindi, traveling to the lake and to the mountains, water skiing, snow skiing, and riding his motorcycle in Panama City with his Lockheed buddies. He also loved cheering on his Georgia Bulldogs to two National Championships and bragging about his grandchildren.

Chris was preceded in death by his mother, Virlyn Smith Savage, and his father, Robert Savage. Left to miss him until we see each other again are his beloved wife, Cindi Wills Savage; his daughters, Heather Courtney (Justin) and Meredith McLeod (Kyle); his stepsons, Tyler Parris (Terri), Will Parris (Kayla), and Hunter Parris; and his grandchildren, John and Maggie Courtney, Betsy and Graham McLeod, Ramey Parris, and Hope and Hadley Parris. Chris also leaves behind his sister, Gloria Savage, and many beloved cousins.

The family would like to thank Dr. Parin Chheda, Dr. Suku George, Dr. Walid Shaib, the oncology nurses at Kennestone Hospital, and the staff at Wellstar Hospice for their compassionate care of Chris prior to his passing.

Arrangements will be taken care of by Georgia Funeral Care in Acworth, Ga. Visitation with the family will begin at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, October 27, 2025, at the First Baptist Church of Marietta, with a funeral service to follow at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the First Baptist Church of Marietta.

A Royal Weekend in Georgia: Prince Charlesโ€™s Historic 1977 Visit

In October 1977, Prince Charles made history as the first member of the British Royal Family to visit Georgia, embarking on a whirlwind tour that showcased the stateโ€™s Southern charm, civic pride, and cultural richness. His visit, hosted by Governor George Busbee, began with a warm welcome at Dobbins Air Reserve Base in Marietta, where he was greeted by Gov. Busbee, Atlanta Mayor Maynard Jackson, and a crowd of citizen airmen and spectators.

From there, the Prince was given a โ€œcrash courseโ€ in Southern hospitality and heritage. He addressed the Georgia General Assembly at the State Capitol, attended a performance at the Fox Theatre featuring Billy Coleman and students from the School of Performing Arts, and even cheered on the Bulldogs at Sanford Stadium during a University of Georgia football game.
