⏰ Drive Safely After the Daylight Saving Time Change
Please use extra caution on the roads today following the “spring ahead” time change.
A 2020 study published in Current Biology found an increase in motor vehicle accident risk associated with the daylight saving transition. Fatal crashes were more likely later in the day after the time change — despite having more daylight hours. The risk was highest the day immediately following the shift and gradually declined over the course of the week.
The impact was more pronounced in Eastern states compared to the Western U.S., likely due to greater circadian misalignment caused by later sunrises. When sunrise occurs later and daylight extends further into the evening, our internal clocks (circadian rhythms) may need time to adjust.
Even a one-hour shift can affect sleep, alertness, reaction time, and decision-making.
🚗 Be mindful.
💤 Prioritize rest.
⚠️ Stay alert.
