New year, new career.

Marietta Roswell Counseling, LLC is currently seeking provisionally and fully licensed individuals to join our team. As a comprehensive practice centrally located between Marietta and Roswell, our team works with all developmental age groups, individuals, couples and families. We are currently looking for mental health professionals who want to work with children, couples and families.

The ideal candidate(s) will be a self-motivated individual pursuing, or having obtained certification in play therapy, the Gottman Couples Method, and/or Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy.

This is a 1099 contract position with part- and full-time openings, a competitive compensation split and a dedicated marketing and networking associate to assist in building your caseload. For APC’s, professional supervision is provided.

Travelling is good for our mental health!

As we are heading towards the summer and slowly out of a pandemic, many of us are considering taking the road or getting on a plane and visiting a foreign country.

Let’s explore the many mental health and wellness benefits of travelling this summer:

Brain stimulation is always good for our mental health. Most of what we do in our daily lives is part of our routine and are tasks we perform without a thought. Getting away from our environment and routine is a great stimulation for our brain and a mood lifter.

While on vacation, we are often in a special mindset of relaxation and exploration. Some travel could be stressful, but when at destination, we can relax and recover from a year of work and stress. We most often engage in activities we might not have the chance to pursue at home such as water sports or mountain hiking or just lounging on a beach… Being active boosts our secretion of “feel good neurotransmitter” such as dopamine and in turns, boosts our moods alleviating our anxiety and depression.

Another benefit of stepping away from our routine is introspection. Going away will not cure our problems but removing ourselves from our environment can help us reflect and expose us to different perspectives or options we would not have imagined by staying home. Something that seems so important at home, might reveal itself as mildly important while away and we might gain different insights or find new answers to our challenges. Our inner conflicts fuel our depression and anxiety and comes from a disconnect between our values and the state of our lives. As our brain is more alert, it is a great time to reconnect with ourselves, our values, and priorities. Use that time to examine the disconnects and find options to realign…

Travelling is also a unique opportunity to create new memories with the people we love and reconnect away from the stress and speed of our normal lives. Research shows that, because we are inherently social individuals, one of the main factors to gain a sense of fulfillment and happiness, is the quality of our connections and relationships with others. Creating common experiences while travelling can help us deepen those connections and enrich our common history as a family or couple.

During our daily routine and the speed of our lives, most of us have lost connection to the present moment and noticing and enjoying the simple things in life. Because a lot is new while travelling, especially to unfamiliar destinations, we are more alert, our senses are heightened which propels us into the present moment. Living in the present moment is known to reduce blood pressure, anxiety, and depression. We might be noticing the sound of an unfamiliar bird or enjoying the taste of new spices and cuisine…

For all those benefits and more, we hope everyone of you takes the opportunity to get away and our MRC team is wishing you and your family a healthy and happy summer!…

Two New Counselors at Marietta Roswell Counseling!
Marietta Roswell Counseling is excited to announce that we have two new counselors joining our therapy group, Bryon McDonald and Jeremy Hallock.

Scott Pennington, our clinical director and one of our LPCs, could not accept any new clients requesting a male counselor so we are happy to be able to accommodate our community's needs with our new recruits.

Both are a very good fit with our practice and have the same person-centered and Rogerian approach which respects the following values:

- Optimistic view of humanity
- Seeing value in each individual
- Offering a non-judgmental environment
- Genuineness and unconditional positive regard

IS COUPLES THERAPY ABOUT SELF-CARE?

Many more couples have sought couples therapy because of the
strains the pandemic has inflicted on relationships. Our lives have been altered in a profound way during COVID with less social interactions outside the household and a lot more togetherness in our homes.

As couples experience therapy, they come to realize that it is not just for couples trying to save their marriage and avoid divorce but also for couples trying to deepen their relationship by becoming more in tune with one another, better listeners, communicators, and problem solvers. Couples therapy is a form of maintenance!

Improving our social skills and our ability to become a better partner is an expertise that can be developed like going to the gym and working our muscles, states Dr.Katz, a clinical psychologist in LA in a New York Times article.

We are all coming from different backgrounds, families of origin with different dynamics, have experienced different life events and have different personalities which can evolve over time. Many of us have come to realize that getting along with our life partner with minimum effort is closer to myth than reality!

Feeling supported by an outside party who is impartial and whose client is the couple as an entity and not the individuals is helpful to
many couples. Learning the tools to resolve and better manage challenges in a non-confrontational, non-threatening environment is an efficient strategy to reach more fulfilment as a couple.

Misconceptions are common around couples counseling such as believing that you only go to couples counseling as a last resort to attempt to save your relationship. Another misconception is that if you are in couples counseling for a while, it must not be working, instead of looking at it as a growth process such as meditation, yoga, or a wellness routine…

Of course, the therapist teaches you the tools to be self-sufficient and manage your relationship in a healthy way on your own. It will come a time when you will only use your therapist when challenges arise or on an as-needed basis.

At MRC, our couples therapists are Gottman trained, which is a well-researched, evidence-based process to train couples to grow their relationship in a healthy way. In this New York Times article, research from the Gottman Institute states that, on average, couples wait 6 years after identifying a problem to start seeing a therapist. Dr. Katz explains that “When couples wait until a breaking point, it is so much harder to have them come back together because the wounds can be so deep.”

Will you know to answer the question is couples therapy about self-care? If practicing prevention is the sensible way to approach our physical health, it is also the sensible way to go about our mental health and our relationships!
