This was such an enlightening post to write! As a dietitian AND as a mom, it’s scary the amount of really bad (and sometimes dangerous) information is online about food and nutrition. Much of it is targeted at our kids. Read more in the link to the article.

Teenagers get nutrition advice from many sources, including family, friends, health professionals and social media. Unfortunately, the quality of this advice varies.

Wondering about infant formula safety? Check out this article I wrote for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

Because infants are a vulnerable population, it is essential that infant formulas always be safe. The following information can help caregivers when selecting and preparing infant formula.

“After the Sabbath, at dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to look at the tomb. There was a violent earthquake, for an angel of the Lord came down from heaven and, going to the tomb, rolled back the stone and sat on it. His appearance was like lightning, and his clothes were white as snow. The guards were so afraid of him that they shook and became like dead men. The angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay. Then go quickly and tell his disciples: ‘He has risen from the dead and is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him.’ Now I have told you.” So the women hurried away from the tomb, afraid yet filled with joy, and ran to tell his disciples. Suddenly Jesus met them. “Greetings,” he said. They came to him, clasped his feet and worshiped him. Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid. Go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee; there they will see me.””
‭‭Matthew‬ ‭28‬:‭1‬-‭10‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Do not be afraid. He is risen. It’s the best day of the year. The reminder of the temporary nature of this life, no matter our troubles, and the promise of life ever after. 🙌

Happy Easter!
He is risen!
He is risen indeed.

Do you have questions about ultra-processed foods? This is a great piece about this issue from CBS News. I agree that not all processed foods are created equally. In fact, there are healthy processed foods. But most of them are not.

Americans are among the world's biggest consumers of ultra-processed foods, which comprise more than half of an average adult’s diet and two-thirds of a chil...

Pondering all things nutrition today. Sometimes I feel like there’s so much unnecessary controversy. Whenever I run into controversy in the nutrition space, I try to step back and ask questions rather than jump in with a judgment. Why is the topic controversial? Who is driving the controversy? Who stands to benefit or to lose based on who “wins”?

Very often I ask myself how this affects the average person. Does this add to confusion or provide clarity? Does this cause harm?

One hot topic is the concept of processed or ultra processed foods. I feel like most healthcare and nutrition pros agree that the healthiest way for people to eat is to focus on whole foods, mostly of plant origin. Where I think people get tripped up as thinking about the degree of processing of foods, and how that affects nutrition. Some processing is definitely necessary in our food. I’m sorry, but I don’t have the time to make pasta from scratch on a regular. I’m happy to have access to dried pasta and noodles like the ones I ate today and my very simple Ramen bowl. I think people need to know that it’s OK to eat some processed foods. Processing foods can help make foods more convenient and safer. And sometimes processed foods are simply necessary or helpful.

We need to understand that quantity matters. When most people eat a diet that 60% heavily processed foods (a statistic that I heard at my annual nutrition conference last fall), including fast food, or heat and serve foods, it is a problem, contributing far more added sugar and sodium than is healthful.

Context matters. And so does nuance.

I’m not in the business of vilifying food, but we all need to know how to accomplish balance and to make most of our food choices ones that move us toward health and away from disease. As a registered dietitian nutritionist, it’s my goal to help people understand how to choose foods that promote their health - helping them avoid preventable disease and manage their risk and any conditions that come up. I want to help people make choices that lead to longer more productive, more vibrant lives.

Do you feel confused or frustrated about competing messages about what to eat?

Who’s That Girl?

Hi! I’m Sherry, a registered dietitian nutritionist and 100% southern girl. I love healthy food and I also enjoy foods that taste great - I especially love it when I can marry the two. My approach to food and nutrition is really about balance and moderation, finding what works in an individual’s life, and sharing the science-supported recommendations over the trendy ones every time. I have expertise in food allergies, culinary nutrition, and digestive wellness and have worked with individuals of all ages, groups, and corporate clients. I’m also a busy mom and wife, Jesus lover, and often traveling professional. I live my life each day to champion wellness - that means mental, spiritual and physical health - and to live a wholehearted life. Hope you’re inspired by what you find here! xo
