When you’re diagnosed with a spinal tumor or mass, one of the most important factors in determining treatment is where the tumor is located.

In our latest blog, we break down the key differences between intradural tumors (inside the protective covering of the spinal cord) and extradural tumors (outside the dura, often involving the bones or epidural space). While both can cause serious symptoms such as pain, weakness, numbness, or balance issues, their location plays a major role in surgical approach, recovery, and long-term outcomes.

The article also explains common tumor types, how imaging like MRI helps classify spinal masses, and why specialized neurosurgical expertise and advanced technology—such as microsurgical techniques and intraoperative neuromonitoring—are critical for safe and effective tumor removal.

If you or a loved one has been told you have a spinal mass, understanding the type and location is the first step toward the right care.

Nothing gives us more pleasure than working with and treating patients such as Tony. When patients are highly motivated to return to and increase their level of physical activity, their surgical outcomes can be nothing short of spectacular. Tony was suffering from a condition in which two vertebrae were slipping against each other and compressing his nerves. After an outpatient, minimally invasive surgery, he is back to running marathons and could not be happier. No matter who the patient, our goals remain the same: to relieve pain, restore motion, and allow patients to live their life to the fullest.

Three signs it’s time to see a Neurosurgeon 🚨

- worsening weakness
- failed conservative treatments
- MRI detected structural problems

Pain management often treats symptoms, but the cause may require surgical insight

Spinal instability can be an underlying cause of back pain, nerve symptoms, and discomfort with everyday movement.

Dr. Luke explains how we diagnose spinal instability using dynamic X-rays and CT scans to evaluate movement between the vertebrae and identify the source of pain. 🦴
