PETS AND SECONDHAND SMOKE

Secondhand smoke poses significant health risks to pets, including increased chances of respiratory disease, cancer, heart disease, and other serious health problems. Here are some key facts about the effects of secondhand smoke on pets:
Respiratory Issues: Pets exposed to secondhand smoke are at higher risk for respiratory diseases, including asthma and bronchitis.

Cancer Risk: Secondhand smoke exposure is linked to an increased risk of cancers such as lung cancer, nasal cancer, and lymphoma.

Grooming Behavior: Cats groom themselves to remove fur from secondhand smoke, which can lead to ingestion of harmful chemicals.

Allergic Reactions: Pets can experience allergic reactions to secondhand smoke, leading to symptoms like skin irritation and respiratory issues.

Environmental To***co Smoke (ETS): ETS includes both secondhand smoke and thirdhand smoke, which can linger on surfaces and be ingested by pets.

To protect pets from secondhand smoke, it is crucial to maintain a completely smoke-free environment. This includes not smoking indoors or in cars, even with windows open, and ensuring that pets do not interact with smokers.

For more detailed information and resources, pet owners can refer to the CDC's Secondhand Smoke Resources, which provide fact sheets, research, reports, and videos about secondhand smoke.

WHY SPAYING IS IMPORTANT:

-Disease Prevention: Spaying eliminates the risk of ovarian and uterine cancers and life-threatening uterine infections (pyometra).

-Reduced Cancer Risk: The procedure significantly lowers the incidence of mammary (breast) tumors, which are malignant in a high percentage of both dogs and cats. The protective effect is greatest if the pet is spayed before her first heat cycle.

-Eliminates Heat Cycles: Spayed females do not go into heat, which means no messy cycles and a reduction in associated behaviors like yowling, restlessness, and frequent urination (sometimes inappropriately in the house).

-Calmer Demeanor: Spayed pets may exhibit fewer hormone-related mood swings and can be more focused on their family, contributing to a calmer household environment.

-Less Desire to Roam: The hormonal drive to find a mate is removed, making spayed pets less likely to wander away from home and risk injury from traffic accidents or fights with other animals.
