There are few things that capture the pure innocence and joy of children like playing in the leaves

I cant get over these autumn leaves!!!

Took this slow-mo video the other day.

Turns out it works beautifully for a breathing exercise.

In through the nose 1, 2, 3, 4
Hold 1, 2
Exhale through the mouth 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6
Hold 1, 2
Repeat for the duration of the reel

That's a wrap for October. Woohoo!

October was wildly full. I celebrated 6 birthdays (a sister, my mom, 2 of my daughters and 2 of my boyfriend's kids!!) as well as welcomed 2 new lives into this world.

Our first birth of October was was an unexpected one. This little man decided he needed to be born nearly 6 weeks early. Despite his early arrival though he was breathing well within 24 hours and eating like a champ. Mom, dad and baby were able to come home a couple of days ago and I couldn't be happier for them!

The second birth of October came just 24 hours after the 1st. A successful VBAC! This mama was given a 50% success rate (how do they even calculate that!?!) and obliterated the stats. She navigated her labor beautifully and I'm so happy she got the birth she dreamed of.

As I reflect on the month I'm reminded of a couple of things:
1. Birth is unpredictable and sometimes there are true medical emergencies. This is why I am not, nor will ever be, anti-medical world. I truly believe it's not needed as often as it's called upon, but in the instances where it is needed I am forever grateful it is available to my clients.

3. C-section births deserve as much celebration and acknowledgement as vaginal births. These mamas have had to navigate incredibly hard decisions and put their bodies through a spectacular sacrifice to bring their babies into the world. C-sections are rarely elective, so not only is arriving at the decision to pursue this kind of birth hard, but the circumstances leading up to the choice are often full of surprise, shock, and maybe some fear and uncertainty. C-sections are some of the strongest among us.

2. Birthing intuition is in ALL of us. We just need to make room for it. As I spoke to my VBAC mama at her prenatal this week I shared with her my view - how she snapped into labor mode, knew exactly what she needed, moved how her body told her to - and I saw it dawn on her face. See, his beautiful mama is highly analytical, super intelligent, leaning deeply on facts and statistical truths, but in that moment she had tapped into something different. A raw instinctual intuitive force...
"Your birthing instinct totally kicked in..." I said
"I did didn't I. I didn't know it was in me!" she said in awe and amazement of herself.

That mama discovered a new, amazing, powerful part of how she's made. She forever knows that she CAN birth babies and that EVERYTHING she needs to do it is in her. That was an absolutely spectacular awakening to witness.

Thank you October for your lessons, your beauty, your mercies and provisions. For showing me again why this work is so very important.

Due to the federal government shutdown, November SNAP benefits will not be issued.

You will still be able to use any remaining balance on your EBT card after November 1. You can check your EBT balance by calling the number on the back of your card, 800-359-5802, logging into your ConnectEBT account online, or using the ConnectEBT Mobile app. Iowa HHS will continue to process eligibility for the SNAP program at this time. If approved, SNAP cards will be mailed, but no benefits will be loaded onto the card if the shutdown is still in effect. Please visit hhs.iowa.gov/SNAP for updates.
