In honor of National Breastfeeding Awareness Month (August), St. Luke Hospital is pleased to announce the formation of a breastfeeding support group! It will meet here at St. Luke Hospital on Thursdays from 10:30AM-12PM, starting Thursday, September 1, 2022! At the first meeting, light snacks and drinks will be provided.

Come network with other moms, gain resources, and navigate the breastfeeding journey with your little one at this weekly group led by our Speech-Language Pathologist and Certified Lactation Counselor. Learning how to breastfeed takes time and practice. Having a support system to help answer your questions and provide feedback can be extremely helpful.

During the group time, you can:
- check your baby’s weight pre and post nursing
- have baby’s latch evaluated
- have baby’s oral motor skills evaluated for tongue or lip tie
- ask questions
- discuss when to start solids smoothly
- ask more questions
- determine if a 1:1 session with our CLC is warranted

Kansas providers may now administer an additional dose of Pfizer or Moderna COVID-19 vaccine to individuals who are moderately or severely immunocompromised and have already been fully vaccinated with those vaccines, following this week's expansion of the emergency use authorization by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the CDC's Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices recommendation.

“The data shows us that the vaccine efficacy in some people who are immunocompromised is significantly lower than in people who are not immunocompromised,” said Secretary Lee Norman, M.D. “Additionally, people who are immunocompromised represent up to 44% of hospitalized breakthrough cases in the United States. This additional dose may enhance the immunity for those who need extra protection from COVID-19.” Learn more:https://khap2.kdhe.state.ks.us/NewsRelease/PDFs/08-13-21%20Third%20Dose%20final.pdf

It’s time to get your flu shot! We are already seeing influenza in the area.

An awesome post about the flu vaccine from one of our Urgent Care doctors: The evening after getting my flu shot, I felt chilly and achy. Took my temperature and found it to be 101.1 F. It topped out at 102.4 F.

The flu shot did NOT make me sick. It did not cause the flu. This fever is my immune system in action. My body “thinks” I have the flu and is responding as it should. I’m making antibodies so when the real flu comes around later this year, I’m ready to fight it off quickly and effectively.

This common and short-lived inconvenience is much preferred over the real flu. Influenza kills about 1 in 1000 infected persons each year. The flu vaccine is our best shot at preventing this life-threatening illness!
