🚁 Winter is settling in, and with it comes unique challenges for aviation — especially for medical aircraft like ours at Air Evac Lifeteam.
Even when the skies look clear from the ground, cold-weather conditions can create hazards that affect whether we’re able to launch safely.

One of the biggest winter concerns in aviation is icing.
Icing is the buildup of ice on an aircraft’s wings, rotor blades, engine components, or instruments. Even a small amount of ice can significantly affect performance by:

• altering aerodynamics
• decreasing lift and increasing drag
• reducing overall aircraft performance
• interfering with critical instruments
• decreasing engine power or causing potential damage

When does icing occur?
Icing can happen anytime the air temperature is 32°F (0°C) or colder and there is visible moisture present such as clouds, fog, rain, freezing drizzle, sleet, or snow.

Many icing events come from supercooled water droplets such as liquid moisture that remains unfrozen in freezing temperatures. When these droplets strike an aircraft, they freeze instantly, creating potentially dangerous ice buildup.

Even when the weather appears perfect from the ground, hazardous icing may exist at altitude or along the flight path.
That’s why our pilots conduct thorough weather evaluations before every mission and at times consult our Operational Control Center which consist of other pilots scanning the radar while we are out flying!

This week, our crews had the opportunity to participate in Grand Rounds led by our incredible Regional Educators and Medical Director. Watching teams from multiple bases come together, collaborate, and work through real life scenarios is nothing short of inspiring.

We are proud of the dedication, knowledge, and professionalism our crews bring to the table every single day. Opportunities like this strengthen our skills, build teamwork, and ensure we are always ready to provide the highest level of care to those we serve.

We are incredibly proud to recognize Flight Nurse and Base Clinical Lead Arianne of Air Evac Lifeteam 35 on receiving the prestigious Medical Director’s Excellence Coin! This is a remarkable honor—and one that can only be earned once in a lifetime.

Below is the description of what this coin represents, as shared by our Medical Director, Dr. Huff:

“The Medical Director’s Excellence Coin can only be earned once and will be awarded in person. These will be given to those outstanding individuals who I feel set the bar high for our organization. This coin recognizes those who maintain a high level of excellence in several different areas: integrity (capturing both honesty and safety), dedication to their patients and team, clinical knowledge, leadership, compassion for others, and a deep sense of pride in what they do.”

Arianne exemplifies every one of these qualities. Her unwavering integrity, clinical excellence, leadership, and compassion shine not only within AEL 35, but across all the communities and team members she supports throughout Air Evac.
