šØ PSA: Expired Medications ā What You Should Know šØ
Weāve all been there⦠you open the medicine cabinet and find a bottle that expired last year (or longer š¬). So what actually happens if someone takes expired medication?
Hereās the truth:
āļø Most expired medications are not toxic, but they may not work as well because the active ingredient slowly breaks down over time.
ā ļø The biggest risk is reduced effectiveness, which can be dangerous for certain medications.
š« Do NOT use expired:
⢠Insulin
⢠Antibiotics
⢠Injectable medications
⢠Eye or ear drops
⢠Seizure, heart, or thyroid medications
These medications can lose potency or sterility, increasing the risk of complications or infection.
š§Ŗ Liquids and injectables are more likely to be unsafe than tablets or capsules.
š Some OTC meds (like acetaminophen) may still be safe shortly after expirationābut replacement is always the safest option.
šļø Take a few minutes this week to clean out your medicine cabinet.
Proper disposal protects your health and your household.
š Most pharmacies offer safe medication disposal, or you can check for local drug take-back events.
When in doubtādonāt guess. Go ahead and toss them.
