Yosemite National Park is preparing to welcome visitors for the 2026 Horsetail Fall viewing period, projected for February 10–26, when the setting sun can illuminate the waterfall on El Capitan with a fiery glow. No reservations are required this year. Visitors will park in eastern Yosemite Valley and walk to designated viewing areas using a temporary pedestrian lane on Northside Drive.

Because the effect depends on natural conditions, including water flow, clear skies, and the angle of the sun, travelers may wish to plan for multiple evenings. The park encourages visitors to arrive early, park once, and be prepared for winter conditions as staff work to ensure a safe, enjoyable experience while protecting sensitive natural and cultural resources.

What if this Valentines Day, you started the day creating something just for you? What if you slowed down, dropped into your senses, and made space to feel what you actually want to feel more of?

In natural perfumery, heart notes are the emotional center of a blend—the botanicals that bloom on your skin and shape how a scent is felt. In this workshop, you’ll explore heart notes both literally and experientially, learning how natural floral essences influence mood, memory, and presence. Floral notes you’ll explore include Rose, Lavender, Jasmine absolutes, Ylang Ylang extra and Clary Sage essential oils.

You’ll design and create a custom perfume centered around what resonates with you.

No prior experience needed—just curiosity and your willingness to show up for yourself. Only 2 spots left!

Valentine’s Day, February 14
10:00am - 12:30pm

Perfume doesn’t need to announce you to support you.

Many people ditch perfumes not because they stop loving scent—but because their body starts responding with headaches, tension, fatigue, or overwhelm.

Natural perfume offers a different experience. One that’s quieter, more personal, and more responsive to how you actually feel.

When you slow down and wear scent with intention, it becomes less about performance and more about presence. A simple pause that gently shifts the tone of your day.

If this way of relating to perfume resonates, I shared a deeper reflection on the blog—exploring how to wear scent as a grounding daily practice rather than a background habit.

650 kilograms of rose petals. 1 kilogram of absolute. One unforgettable scent.

Sweet, deep, mellow—with an antique quality like velvet curtains or old love letters. Bulgarian rose absolute (Rosa damascena) is rich and honeyed, with a whisper of indole (that slightly animalic warmth), hints of spice, and fresh green notes that emerge in the drydown like morning dew.

With over 400 chemical constituents, Rosa damascena is one of the most intricate aromatic materials in existence. Bulgarian rose absolutes are so sought-after in high-class perfumery that Steffen Arctander wrote they’re “hardly possible to define [their] field of application.”

Harvested at dawn in Bulgaria’s Valley of Roses, it takes 650 kilos of petals to make 1 kilo of absolute. Rose absolute is created through solvent extraction, capturing the heavy honeyed base notes steam distillation can’t reach. Historically, roses were preserved through enfleurage—fresh petals pressed into fat-coated glass, absorbing scent over days.

In blending, rose is remarkably generous. She rounds out sharp edges, softens citrus, bridges heart and base notes, and brings fullness to compositions. Perfumers call her a “blender”—she makes other materials smell better, more harmonious, more complete. Even at low dilutions, rose transforms a pleasant blend into something memorable.

Rose has ruled perfumery since ancient Persia. In the body, she’s a heart-opener—softening edges, inviting you to feel without fear, reminding you that beauty and complexity can coexist.

Join me February 14, 10am-12:30pm at Hillside Glass Co. in downtown Mariposa for Heart Notes: A Botanical Perfume Workshop. Smell, blend and create with Bulgarian rose. Make your own signature scent to take home. Link in bio—space is limited.

A 30-second ritual for emotional balance (using something you’re already wearing) ✨

Your sense of smell is the only sense with a direct line to your emotional brain. When you breathe in a scent, it bypasses your thinking mind entirely and goes straight to your limbic system—where emotion, memory, and instinct live.

This is why a single scent can shift your mood before you even realize it’s happening.

Natural botanical perfumes work with this system gently. Plant-based aromas signal safety and steadiness to your nervous system without forcing anything. They’re an invitation, not a command.

I just published a new blog post diving deep into the science of scent and emotional balance, plus a simple ritual you can use with your natural perfume (it takes less than a minute).

Here’s the basic practice:

→ Apply perfume slowly to your pulse points
→ Take one conscious breath
→ Bring your attention to the center of your head (where scent becomes feeling)
→ Notice how it FEELS rather than what it smells like

You’re not trying to achieve anything. You’re just pausing. Breathing. Noticing. And in that small moment, your nervous system gets permission to settle.

📖 Read the full post for:
• Why scent affects emotional balance (the neuroscience)
• How natural perfume interacts with your nervous system
• The complete step-by-step ritual with detailed guidance
• How to make this practice your own

In natural perfumery, scent is not static—it unfolds.
What we now call top, middle (or heart), and base notes comes from a 19th-century framework developed by perfumer and chemist Septimus Piesse, known as the Octave of Odors. He observed that aromatic materials reveal themselves over time, much like musical notes rising and falling in a composition.

Top notes rise quickly—volatile, bright, and awakening.
Base notes anchor the scent—dense, resinous, and enduring.
And heart notes are where the perfume truly lives.

Heart notes are typically flowers, aromatic leaves, and spices—materials valued not only for their beauty, but for their ability to carry emotion. Long before modern perfume structure existed, florals were used as medicine, adornment, and offering.

In Ayurvedic and Persian traditions, flowers were infused into oils and attars to soften the emotional body and restore balance. In Mediterranean folk medicine, floral waters were used to calm the nerves, support the heart, and mark rites of love, grief, and renewal. Across cultures, florals were chosen for moments of transition—because they move us.

Biologically, flowers exist to attract, to invite connection, to ensure continuation of life. When experienced through scent, they often resonate with our own capacity to open, bond, endure, and renew. This is why heart notes feel warming, comforting, sensual, or quietly fortifying on the skin.

As master perfumer Mandy Aftel writes,
“When you put heart notes into a blend, you’re literally putting the heart into it—they are the tie that binds.”

This Valentine’s Day, I’m offering an intimate botanical perfume workshop devoted entirely to heart notes—exploring their history, aromatic function, and emotional intelligence through Slow Scent® and hands-on blending.

I recently had the honor of creating a custom perfume with Liv to celebrate her 14th birthday. Not only as a novelty or a “make-your-own” activity—but as a thoughtful, intentional experience.

We moved slowly. We smelled. We listened—to what she was drawn to, what made her soften, what made her light up. I watched her confidence grow with each choice, each yes and no. This is one of the quiet gifts of working with scent: it teaches discernment, presence, and trust in your own responses.

Her final perfume felt unmistakably hers. Not something borrowed. Not something trendy. Something that met her exactly where she is right now—on the edge of becoming.

At the end, she held her bottle with that particular kind of pride that comes from having created something meaningful, something personal. A scent to grow with. A memory sealed in aroma.

Experiences like this remind me why I do this work—not just to make perfume, but to create moments of reflection, initiation, and self-recognition through scent.

I’m very pleased to announce my custom perfume sessions are evolving, and I can’t wait to share what’s next in 2026… stay tuned!
