Lately, the still’s been running almost daily. I’m working on a collection that captures the place I’m fortunate I’ve been able to call home for most of my adult life (Yosemite and the surrounding regions).

I’ve been focused with the trees of the lower/upper montane and subalpine zones—
incense cedar, ponderosa pine, douglas fir, sugar pine, white fir—distilling them individually to observe, study and capture their distinct aroma and essence found in their needles and woods.

Next, I want to try Mountain Misery and Mugwort. And once the snow melts and higher elevation forests become accessible again- sequoia, hemlock, fir.

Follow along for the ride 💛 and share this post with a friend who loves the fresh mountain-scape scents of the Sierra.

Something from the Sierra is in the still today.

I’m working on an exciting NEW collection of local mountain aromatics, and before I reveal it… I gotta ask-

When you think of the Sierra, what plant or tree scents come to mind? What’s your favorite?

This morning’s bike ride up the Briceburg Burma Grade came with a nice surprise- my first ever sighting of a foothill saprophyte: Broomrape (Aphyllon fasciculatum).

Clusters of it are growing along the hillside — (Thank you, Athena, for the tip!)

Broomrape is a parasitic plant, loosely called a saprophyte. It doesn’t photosynthesize, which is why you don’t see green leaves. Instead, it attaches to the roots of a host plant underground and draws nutrients through a specialized structure called a haustorium.

It’s also connected, indirectly, to the broader mycorrhizal fungal networks in the soil — part of the same underground system that moves nutrients and chemical signals between plants.

How cool is that?! Have you seen one?

Yosemite National Park is preparing to welcome visitors for the 2026 Horsetail Fall viewing period, projected for February 10–26, when the setting sun can illuminate the waterfall on El Capitan with a fiery glow. No reservations are required this year. Visitors will park in eastern Yosemite Valley and walk to designated viewing areas using a temporary pedestrian lane on Northside Drive.

Because the effect depends on natural conditions, including water flow, clear skies, and the angle of the sun, travelers may wish to plan for multiple evenings. The park encourages visitors to arrive early, park once, and be prepared for winter conditions as staff work to ensure a safe, enjoyable experience while protecting sensitive natural and cultural resources.

What if this Valentines Day, you started the day creating something just for you? What if you slowed down, dropped into your senses, and made space to feel what you actually want to feel more of?

In natural perfumery, heart notes are the emotional center of a blend—the botanicals that bloom on your skin and shape how a scent is felt. In this workshop, you’ll explore heart notes both literally and experientially, learning how natural floral essences influence mood, memory, and presence. Floral notes you’ll explore include Rose, Lavender, Jasmine absolutes, Ylang Ylang extra and Clary Sage essential oils.

You’ll design and create a custom perfume centered around what resonates with you.

No prior experience needed—just curiosity and your willingness to show up for yourself. Only 2 spots left!
