Vision develops rapidly after birth. Any undetected vision problem can have a significant impact on infant and childhood development. The earlier a problem is detected and treated, the less likely it is that other areas of development will be affected.

Joanna is a 71 year old woman who came to us in May 2022 after a fall in August 2019. She was having constant eye pain and headaches which got worse throughout the day and spiked during reading or television. She had seen multiple other specialists, had MRIs, done PT for her neck, and tried migraine medications with no success. It wasn’t until she saw a concussion specialist that she was formally diagnosed with a concussion and sent to see us. We diagnosed her with an eye teaming problem and recommended vision therapy. She completed 10 sessions of vision therapy and can now watch tv and read without any pain or discomfort! Check out her story!

Laura came to us almost three months after a concussion. She had frequent headaches, dizziness, and couldn’t read for more than 10 mins without symptoms. We diagnosed her with eye teaming and tracking problems. She completed 20 sessions of vision therapy and read below to see the difference! Laura’s story is not uncommon as many ophthalmologists and concussion care providers don’t understand vision therapy and assume that if they don’t provide it or don’t understand it then it must not work. There is plenty of research to show that VT works and even more is in the pipeline! I’m so glad that Laura was working with an amazing PT who shared her personal experience working with patients who had done vision therapy. Vision therapy rocks! Check out our website if you’re curious about the research or to learn more.

Karen came to us after a concussion from falling and hitting her head. She was out of work because she couldn’t use a computer without eyestrain, fatigue, dizziness, and headaches. We diagnosed her with an eye teaming problem with reduced depth perception and a tracking problem and recommended vision therapy. Karen completed 12 sessions of VT and now can read and use the computer without headaches, eyestrain, and dizziness and has perfect depth perception! Below you can read her testimonial as well as see a picture of Karen and Dr. Beckett on Karen’s last day of vision therapy. Congratulations Karen!!!

We are so proud of Rowan for graduating from vision therapy! Rowan came to us with blurry and double vision during reading as well as issues with reading and copying. He was diagnosed with eye teaming, focusing, tracking, visual processing, and visual motor integration problems. He did 16 sessions to remediate his eye teaming, focusing, and tracking problems and an additional 12 sessions working on visual processing and visual motor integration. He graduated with top marks and he and his parents are thrilled! His parents reported that he is much more willing to read, no complaints about blurry or double vision, improved reading stamina, improved handwriting, and he went up a reading level at school! His depth perception went from moderately reduced to perfect, his tracking went from the 1st to the 70th percentile in accuracy and from the 17th to the 50th in speed, and his visual motor integration went from the 18th to the 77th percentile! Congratulations Rowan!

Kendall is a 6th grader who came to us because her eyes would get tired, blurry, and she was getting frequent headaches after reading and school work. It was also very hard for her to keep her spot while reading and would skip words and lines. We diagnosed her with eye teaming (convergence insufficiency), focusing (accommodative insufficiency), and tracking problems and recommended vision therapy. Kendall completed 18 sessions of vision therapy and has now graduated! She can read for as long as she wants to or needs to without any symptoms and enjoys reading so much more! We are so proud of all the hard work Kendall did in VT!

Strabismus is the name of the condition where both eyes don’t point in the same direction. This can cause issues with depth perception and can cause reduced vision. It can also be emotional for people with strabismus because they may not like the way it looks. We diagnose, manage, and treat strabismus here at GBVT. Below is a NYT article written by someone with strabismus sharing how the world looks to him and how he is treated. It’s an amazing and very moving look into his world.
