Pre-linguistic, or language readiness skills, are ways that children communicate without using words. They are good indicators of a child’s readiness to begin talking. Generally speaking, young children who consistently demonstrate these skills appropriately are ready to begin communicating using sounds, words, and even phrases.

Let's dive in:

➡ In general, a child should be able to pay attention to the same task for 2x longer than their age in minutes (i.e., a child who is 2 years old, should be able to play with the same toy or activity for about 4 minutes).
➡ Children should provide consistent eye contact during play. They should also use it to direct attention to an object.
➡ A child should be able to anticipate an action, like giggling while waiting for your to uncover your eyes during "peek-a-boo."
➡ Children should be able to play with other people using turn-taking. They should also be able to play with toys as they are meant to be used (e.g., rolling a car on the ground).
➡ Children should attempt to imitate gestures and actions of their caregivers.
➡ They should be able to gesture or point to something that they want

This is by no means an exhaustive list! If your child struggles with any of these skills, reach out to us!

It's understandable that parents may be skeptical about receiving speech therapy services online, especially for children who may demonstrate attention difficulties.

Luckily, attention is the first skill we work on! Little ones who move quickly from one activity to the next or are unable to sit still benefit from working on their attention skills prior to working on communication skills.

Little Fish Speech Therapy trains parents how to improve their child's attention skills so that they can begin communicating effectively.
