Today I had the pleasure of giving a young adult with autism his very first massage. 💆‍♂️
This past year has been especially challenging for him, with multiple health struggles, and his mom lovingly accompanied him to the session.

He is high functioning, incredibly well spoken, and truly touched my heart. Autism holds a very special place in my life—as I spent three years in my 20s working in early intervention as a teacher’s assistant. While the work was challenging at times, it was also deeply rewarding. Over the years, I’ve had the honor of working with several adults on the spectrum, and they consistently touch me on a soul level. There’s a purity and sensitivity there—especially in their nervous systems—that I find so fascinating and humbling.

As he was leaving, I asked if I could give him a hug. His mom smiled and said, “Oh, he loves hugs—we both do.” 💞 So I gave them each a heartfelt hug, and it brought me to tears. I could feel the love between them so strongly.

I have so much admiration for moms who support their children in this way—bringing them in for bodywork and helping them feel safe, cared for, and seen, no matter their age. Moments like this are a reminder of why I do this work.
