Are they just picky eaters or is it time to seek out some help?!

Did you know it is common for kids to go through picky eating phases ??? — especially between the ages of 2–5 years. So, how do you know when it is more than just a phase?

Normal picky eating:

~ Prefers certain textures or flavors

~ Gets “stuck” on a few favorite foods

~ Needs several tries before accepting new foods

Time to seek help if your child:

**Eats fewer than 15–20 foods

**Gags or vomits with textures

**Avoids whole food groups

**Gets extremely upset at mealtime

**Has slow growth or weight concerns

**These can all be signs of a feeding difficulty, not just picky eating.

But you’re in luck — we can help! Our feeding specialists can guide your child to explore new foods in a fun, low-stress way.

Each month we pick our speech stars but for the month of November and the month of giving thanks I chose to switch it up a bit and recognize my star SLPs

🌟 A Heartfelt Thank You to My Amazing Team 🌟

Every day at Speak To Me Kids our kids work towards exceeding expectations and extraordinary things happen—because of these incredible SLPs. These women are the heart of this practice and the reason so many children walk out our doors a little more confident, a little more empowered, and a lot more celebrated.

To our all of our therapists Jamie, Amanda. Stefani, Allie, Gabby, Sara, Laura, Erin, Audrey, Melissa, Jordan and Laura - In the month of thanksgiving it has to be said and posted and shouted:

Thank you for your patience—the kind that meets each child exactly where they are.

Thank you for your creativity—turning therapy into play, challenges into victories, and progress into joy.

Thank you for your compassion—showing families that they’re not alone, that growth takes time, and that every milestone matters.

Thank you for your commitment—early mornings, late nights, thoughtful planning, endless energy, and a passion that shines in every session.

You transform frustration into breakthroughs.

You give children the tools to express their hearts.

You give families hope.

What you do is not just work—it’s impact. It’s kindness. It’s life-changing.

I along with so many families are endlessly grateful for the difference you make every single day. And I am so thankful you chose to bring your passion and skill to Speak To Me Kids! You are truly changing lives for the better!

If your child is scheduled for their first speech and language evaluation — welcome! We know it can feel a little unknown, so here’s what to expect:

1. Getting to know you and your child → We will start by chatting with you about your child’s development, strengths, and any concerns you have. Your insight is an important part of the process.

2. Play-based assessment → Most of the evaluation feels like play! We use toys, pictures, and games to see how your child communicates, understands language, and interacts with others in a natural way.

3. Testing and observation → Depending on your child’s age and needs, we may use standardized assessments to better understand their speech sounds, language skills, and/or feeding abilities.

4. Discussion and next steps → We will review what we observed and share our initial impressions. You will have plenty of time to ask questions, and we will outline next steps or recommendations for therapy if needed.

Our goal is to make your child feel comfortable, supported, and informed every step of the way!

Story of the week

This week, we are cozying up with “Bear Says Thanks” by Karma Wilson. It is the perfect fall story about friendship, gratitude, and sharing — just right for November.

As we read, we’re working on:

Expanding vocabulary → words like
share, feast, grateful, and thankful

Sequencing → recalling what each friend brings to the feast

Social language → talking about ways we can say “thank you” and show kindness

Repetitive phrases → practicing the rhythmic line “Bear says thanks!” to build sentence structure and confidence

This story is a great reminder that sometimes, the best way to say “thank you” is just by spending time together.

What’s your favorite fall book to share with your child?

Therapy toy spotlight

Marble runs are always a hit in our therapy room! Kids love building the colorful tracks and watching the marbles zoom, twist, and spin their way down.

Why we love it for speech and language:

Vocabulary and concepts → practice words like
fast, slow, up, down, turn, drop, and roll

Sequencing and planning → talk through the steps as you build

Following directions → great for working on one-step and multi-step directions

Speech sounds → repetition with fun words like
ball, boom, bounce, and bye-bye marble

Social skills → great for turn-taking, problem solving, and teamwork

Not only is it exciting to watch, but it is also packed with opportunities for learning and communication!

Story-telling tips

Storytelling is more than just fun — it helps children build language, imagination, and connection!

Here are a few simple ways to make storytelling a meaningful part of your child’s day:

Use everyday moments → tell short “stories” about your day including what you did, who you saw, and how you felt. It models sequencing and expressive language.

Add pictures or toys → let your child “act out” the story using favorite characters or props to keep it interactive and visual.

Take turns → start a story together. You say one line, your child says the next. It is a great way to practice turn-taking and creativity.

Encourage imagination → there’s no wrong way to tell a story. Silly, spooky, or sweet–let your child’s ideas lead the way.

Building storytelling skills supports vocabulary growth, grammar, memory, and social communication !

Sound of the week /N/

This week we’re practicing the /n/ sound — like in numbers, notebook, nose, nap, and night!

The /n/ sound is made by placing your tongue just behind your top front teeth (on the alveolar ridge) and letting the air flow through your nose while using your voice.

Try these fun ways to practice at home:

Tap and talk: tap your tongue to the ridge behind your top teeth and say “n, n, n” together

Name game: think of everyone’s names that start with /n/ like “Nina,” “Nathan,” and “Nora"

Toy talk: play with toys and say their names every time you use them like “Noah the ninja” or “Nina the nurse”

Story time: read books and locate all the /n/ words

Keep practice short, fun, and positive. Little bursts of repetition throughout the day make a big difference !

Today let’s talk about Minimal Pairs!

Minimal pairs are two words that differ by only one sound, like “bat” and “pat.” Practicing minimal pairs helps kids hear the difference between sounds and improve their speech clarity.

How to practice at home:

Listen carefully → Say each word slowly and clearly. Ask your child to point to the correct picture or object.

Repeat and copy → have your child say each word, focusing on making the target sound correctly.

Make it a game → take turns saying the words and see who can guess the correct word. You can also sort cards or pictures into the right sound category.

Examples of minimal pairs:

p / b: pan / ban

t / d: tip / dip

k / g: cot / got

SLP tip: short, fun practice every day helps children notice and produce sounds more accurately!

Conversation starters for kids

Starting a conversation can be tricky — but practicing at home makes a big difference! Try these fun open-ended questions to get your child talking:

“What was your favorite part of today?”

“If you could be any animal, what would you be?”

“What would you build if you had all the lego blocks in the world?”

Simple prompts like these help kids grow their vocabulary, storytelling, and social skills — all while connecting with you!
