Meet Joel Kangas, DPT, ATC! 👋 Originally from Illinois but raised right here in the U.P., Joel has always had a passion for movement and helping others stay active. After earning his Athletic Training degree from Northern Michigan University, he went on to complete his Doctorate of Physical Therapy at Central Michigan University. He joined the Active PT team in 2019 after working with NMU athletes, including those training with the U.S. Olympic Education Center!

This holiday season, Joel is especially thankful for his wife, children, family, and faith. ❤️ When he’s not helping patients reach their goals, you’ll find him outdoors hunting, fishing, golfing, playing hockey, or skate skiing through the U.P. snow. ❄️

Hip flexion is one of the most important movements your body makes. It’s what lets you lift your leg to walk, run, or climb stairs. 🏃🏽‍♀️Understanding and improving this motion can help reduce pain and increase performance in your daily activities.

Our Ishpeming partners recently donated 200 non-perishable items to the St. Vincent de Paul food pantry. When the pantry shared that local need was rising, our partners came together to help. We’re proud to stand alongside local organizations supporting families during uncertain times and encourage everyone who can to lend a hand to their local food pantry. 💚

One of the questions we hear all the time: “Should I use ice or heat?”

🧊 Ice is best for calming irritation and swelling.
🔥 Heat is best for easing stiffness and tight muscles.

But if pain keeps coming back (or just won’t go away), that’s your cue to call your PT for a personalized plan. 💪

Meet Amy! 👋 Amy is one of the Physical Therapist Assistants at our Country Village location in Ishpeming. During the fall, one of her favorite activities is going on color walks to view all of the beautiful fall leaves. 🍂

An Ishpeming native, Amy returned home after being away for more than 20 years. She graduated from Mott Community College in 2001 and has built her career in outpatient care, with recent experience in nursing homes as well.

Amy is certified in the Graston Technique, has extensive experience with aquatics, and is always eager to learn new therapy techniques. Outside the clinic, she loves staying active and spending time with her family and friends. 💙

Your spine supports you every single day, be sure to show it some love back! 💙

A few small habits can make a big difference in reducing pain at work and in everyday life:
✨ Sit tall: Keep screens at eye level and shoulders relaxed.
✨ Move often: Stand, stretch, or walk every 30–45 minutes.
✨ Lift smart: Bend at your hips and knees, not your back.
✨ Stay strong: Core and back exercises keep your spine stable.

A healthy spine = less pain, better posture, and more freedom to do the things you love. 💪🦴
