Tai Chi, Qigong & Budo Arts
TONIGHT AT 6:30pm with Dr. Traci Baxendale Ball

The gentle movement practices known in the West as Tai Chi and Qigong (TCQG) are rooted in ancient Taoist philosophies that aim to promote longevity, health, vitality, and well-being. These practices, which focus on harnessing energy (Chi) and breath (Qi), are believed to date back to at least the eighth century BCE in China. Because they emphasize internal health, they are referred to as internal arts. TCQG is reparative, therapeutic, cathartic, and transformational. A significant amount of research supports their benefits for various health conditions. Join the Marquette Tai Chi Qigong Club and Chief Instructor Sensei Traci Baxendale Ball for Taijiquan (Tai Chi), Qigong, and Budo (Japanese martial arts) every Monday at 6:30 pm. This two-hour class includes a full hour of Qigong (moving meditation) with a five-element practice to cleanse organs. Qigong promotes relaxation, joint loosening, and gentle stretching, calms the mind, develops spatial awareness, and enhances balance.

After Qigong, the class moves into formal martial arts instruction. Students explore the intricate set of movements that combine all four major styles of Taijiquan, often referred to as the Combined 42 Forms. Formal Bo (or stick) practice helps students develop proficiency with weapons, while integrating other martial arts such as kickboxing and self-defense systems, deepens students' understanding of Taijiquan applications. Students can attend either one or both hours; the cost is the same. Drop-ins and beginners are welcome.

I love talking about the power of our breath! So here is a breathing reminder if life feels chaotic...

Our breath does not stop (until it is our last one). When we embrace the steadiness of a full, relaxed breath, it makes the non-stop movement of life much easier. Rather than running toward peace, we can make peace with the running.

Or another way to look at it: What we resist, persists. Resisting life creates more suffering. Does this sound familiar?: "Wait, I don't like this. Wait, I'm not ready. Wait, this isn't fair. Stop. Hold on." Each time we wait-stop-hold on, we are trying to halt the flow of the present moment.

{OK, necessary addendum here} For sure, there are times when it's appropriate to say 'stop'. But I'm talking about all the times we hesitate and contract unnecessarily. And if we are honest with ourselves, most of us do it a LOT.

Here's an example: Pretend an angry person is yelling at you. We generally respond by tightening our bodies, contracting our breath, and getting terribly sad or angry in response. That heavy, sad or angry response is very draining and can leave us with aches and pains in our bodies. And it can take us a long time to recover. Sometimes years if we hold on to the victim experience of the moment. Alternatively, imagine an angry person yelling at you... you remain soft, your breath remains steady and open. Suddenly you are able to see the immense suffering in the other person from which their anger emerges. This does not justify their actions toward you, but it does help us to not take it personally. We remain clear, - unfogged by sadness, anger, or guilt. From this place, we are much more likely to respond with appropriate words and actions. And we are much less likely to feel drained afterward, because we have allowed the moment to be what it is and pass through us.

So try to notice when you contract or tighten your breath. This can happen during inhales, exhales, or in between. When this happens, see if you can release that tightening and allow the breath to continue its circular, smooth path. Our breathing patterns radiate and reflect our life patterns. When breathing happens with ease, so can life.

Join Leanne for Moonpause on February 5 at 6pm

This workshop is a celebration of the transformative menopausal years. In this empowering workshop, we’ll explore nourishing foods, supportive lifestyles, herbs, and rituals to care for your body, mind, and spirit through perimenopause, menopause, and beyond. Gathering in a circle of sisterhood, we’ll release fear and negativity around menopause and reframe this season as a rich, vibrant transition. Designed for women in their 30s, 40s, and 50s.
Menopause is not a single moment but a journey that can span a decade or more, from early perimenopause through the end of cycles. Understanding this phase as more than just hormonal change, and learning proactive, holistic ways to support it, can greatly ease the transition at any stage.

Leanne is a family practice physician dedicated to natural healing modalities, nutritional medicine, and herbalism. Leanne crafts botanical products using herbs she grows or wild-harvests at Seeds and Spores Family Farm in Chocolay Township, a United Plant Savers Botanical Sanctuary she runs with her husband, Jeff. Their farm uses beyond-organic, regenerative practices to provide nutrient-dense foods and high-quality herbal medicines to the local community.

Sit On Your Partner is BACK!
Bring a friend or partner & deliver therapeutic bodywork to each other!
You'll receive guidance and instruction from not one but two teachers, Chris and Kate. Chris and Kate have guided folks on feeling better in their bodies through various workshops and continuing education classes all over the world. Their combined wisdom of the body and the breath is an experience not to be missed.
Don’t laugh; we’re serious. Bring a friend or partner and learn how to deliver therapeutic, blissful bodywork. You are capable of helping each other release chronic aches and pains. Sometimes that means sitting on their legs or arms. Or walking on each other. For example, sitting on someone's legs can provide lower back relief. Using your heels on their shoulders to relieve neck pain. These are simple but deep massage techniques. You will gain a better understanding of where pain originates and how the body is connected from your toes to your nose.

NO prior massage experience needed. This is extraordinary work designed for ordinary people.
Come have some fun and learn how to help each other out!

Space is limited to 10 couples, so pre-register!

"Moonpause” with Leanne Hatfield is a celebration of the transformative menopausal years. Join her on February 5 at 6pm and explore nourishing foods, lifestyles, herbs, and rituals to support the health of your body, mind, and spirit during this rich stage of life and beyond. As we gather in a circle of sisterhood, we'll toss aside societal negativity and fear about menopause and shift the focus to an empowering and exciting journey. This workshop is geared towards women in their thirties, forties, and fifties.
Leanne is a family practice physician dedicated to natural healing modalities, nutritional medicine, and herbalism. The botanical products that she crafts are made with herbs she either grows or wild harvests on Seeds and Spores Family Farm in Chocolay Township. The diverse farm, which is a United Plant Savers Botanical Sanctuary, is run by Leanne and her husband, Jeff. They incorporate “beyond organic,” regenerative, and authentic farming techniques in order to offer nutrient dense foods and quality herbal medicines to the local community.
The transition from the beginning of perimenopause during the fertile years through the cessation of cycles in early menopause spans over a decade (or two) for most women. There is much that can be done proactively to support this important phase of life. Although the journey is unique for all, there are many overlapping themes. Understanding the process as more than just a shift in hormones can make a big difference in the experience. It is never too early or too late to start engaging with ways to ease the transition and set yourself up for a vibrant next stage.
