April is Occupational Therapy Month! 💙

Today we’re celebrating the incredible impact of Occupational Therapy in home health and hospice care. Our OT professionals help patients maintain independence, restore function, and find comfort in the activities that matter most—right in the place they call home.

From adapting daily routines to improving safety and quality of life, their work brings dignity, confidence, and support to every stage of care.

Thank you to our Occupational Therapists for the compassion, creativity, and expertise you bring to our patients and families each day. 👏

April is Occupational Therapy Month—a commemorative campaign that is anchored in both honoring the profession and driving awareness about it.

From one storm to the next, this week has reminded us how heavy things can feel—and how important it is to come together.

We were grateful to host the U.P. Grief Support Conference, along with Lake Superior Life Care & Hospice and the Northern Michigan University Center for Rural Health, last Friday. We are especially thankful we were able to offer a hybrid option via Zoom, making it possible for people to safely join despite the winter weather. Sometimes the “storm before the storm” is what people are carrying inside—and connection matters more than ever in those moments.

And today, a beautiful Friday—sunshine after it all—feels like a quiet reminder of hope.

Wherever you joined from, thank you for being part of a community that shows up, supports, and helps others through.

Thank you to the Superior Health Foundation for the Community Impact Pilot Grant to allow us to offer this conference. Another thank you to Upper Peninsula Health Plan and the West End Health Foundation for their sponsorships!

🥳RISING STAR ALERT! Congratulations to our Employees of the Year, Janet, Lisa, and Joe!🥳

U.P. Home Health & Hospice and U.P. Private Duty Services recently announced the organization’s Employees of the Year. This annual award is based on peer nominations and specific criteria, which includes a commitment to quality patient care, teamwork, and professional development. Each of the recipients was presented with a monetary award and plaque in recognition of their outstanding service and is recognized on plaques displayed at the agency’s Marquette and Ishpeming offices.

Janet Everson, RN, a 6-year veteran of U.P. Home Health & Hospice was named Direct Care Staff Employee of the Year. “Janet’s patients think very highly of her and often mention her kindness, attention to detail and compassion,” her nomination reads. “She has a calm demeanor, always has something positive to say and is described as a ‘silent hero’ and ‘quiet warrior’ for U.P. Home Health & Hospice.” Janet makes a long-lasting difference for our patients and families and although she prefers to fly under the radar, she is truly appreciated for all that she does.
Lisa Bowers, Administrative Services Clerk, hired in 2024, was named the Non-Direct Care Staff Employee of the Year. “Lisa goes out of her way to make sure everything is organized for the field staff and she is always willing to help with anything in a positive way,” stated her nomination. “She is always friendly and professional, welcoming to all and compassionate to families, and her kind heart is appreciated by all around her.” Lisa is a gem to U.P. Home Health & Hospice, and her friendly and upbeat attitude brightens up the office.

Joseph Stakvel Private Duty Aide, has been selected to be our Private Duty Aide of the Year. He started at U.P. Private Duty Services in 2024. Joe consistently goes above and beyond in every aspect of his work, truly embodying what it means to be Private Duty Aide of the Year. He is always willing to pick up extra shifts and adjust his personal schedule to ensure his clients receive the continuity of care they deserve. No matter the challenge, Joe prioritizes his clients’ needs, demonstrating unwavering dedication, compassion, and professionalism. His commitment to providing exceptional care not only makes a meaningful difference in the lives of those he serves, but also sets a powerful example for the entire team.

“These amazing members of our team received multiple nominations from their peers,” said Jennie Garrett-Bureau, CEO/Administrator of U.P. Home Health & Hospice. “We are honored to have them on our team with their hard work, devotion to our patients, and fulfilling our organization’s high standards of care. Their teamwork and commitment to their profession ensures a high level of excellence in patient care. We are proud that Janet, Lisa, and Joseph are part of our dynamic team of angels.”

Cindy Nyquist, Owner/Founder, agreed. “Since starting U.P. Home Health & Hospice over five decades ago, I am constantly impressed by our remarkable team, in both their clinical and administrative quality work, but also in who they are as human beings. They know our legacy of caring in this community has lasted so long because of what they do for our friends and neighbors. We are lucky to have this team in place.”
