Prairie Home Hospice and Community Care

Prairie Home Hospice and Community Care Prairie Home Hospice is a nonprofit organization incorporated in 1984 to provide hospice care and services to terminally ill persons and their families.

Hospice is a special concept of care for a person in the latter stages of a terminal illness. Our philosophy affirms life and regards death as a normal process. The focus of care is quality of living and dignity with the patient/family retaining control of their lives and treatments. Hospice cares for the total person with support and comfort for the physical, emotional, spiritual and psychosocial needs of both patient and the family. Hospice care is available to anyone who meets our admission criteria without regards to national origin, handicap, age, race, color, creed or ability to pay.

✨ Laced in Legacy — A Night You Won’t Want to Miss ✨
Over 23 years ago, Anne LaPorte drove past a vacant lot in Marshall and casually told her husband, Dr. Vince LaPorte, “I bought a lot.” What he didn’t know was that her bold decision—and the community’s incredible generosity—would spark the creation of Prairie Home Hospice’s very first hospice house.
From a $40,000 plot of land… to $750,000 raised… to the opening of The Lockwood House in 2004, built on the determination of people like Betty Lockwood who simply refused to take “no” for an answer—our story is stitched together by visionaries, neighbors, and everyday heroes.
On Saturday, April 18, 2026, at 5:00pm, we invite you to step into that story.
Join us at The Upper Room Marshall for our annual Charity Event & Auction, themed “Laced in Legacy.” Come celebrate the people and moments that shaped hospice care in our rural community—and help us continue the legacy they began.
More details coming soon… but trust us, you’ll want to be there.

Some legacies begin with love—and a little girl named Jenny.

When Jenny was diagnosed with a rare childhood cancer, her parents, Linda and David Grong, spent years fighting for every moment with her. When they learned her cancer had no cure, they chose to bring her home.

Jenny spent her final months surrounded by the people who loved her most. Despite the challenges, Linda later shared something that continues to shape hospice care in our community: “Jenny really did live until she died.”

That experience inspired Linda to turn her grief into purpose. She helped build Prairie Home Hospice so other families in rural southwest Minnesota could receive compassionate care, comfort, and dignity at the end of life.

This year’s Charity Event & Auction, “Laced in Legacy,” honors the pioneers who brought hospice care to our community—and the legacy that continues through every family we serve.

Join us in celebrating that legacy.
