Today we honor the 300 million people worldwide living with a rare disease and the families, caregivers, and clinicians who support them.

With more than 6,000 known rare diseases—and 72% rooted in genetics—access to timely, accurate diagnosis remains a challenge. Early genetic testing can help shorten long diagnostic odysseys, provide clarity, and help guide more informed care decisions for patients and providers.

This Rare Disease Day, we’re proud to support the movement toward earlier answers, improved care pathways, and greater equity in access to genetic services. Because every family deserves the chance to understand their story—and every patient deserves a clear path forward.

According to the AHA, genetic and genomic testing is no longer a niche service in cardiovascular care—it is an essential component of modern diagnosis, risk stratification, and family‑centered management. What’s changed in this latest policy isn’t which patients benefit—but how health care systems are expected to deliver cardiovascular genetics at scale.
