COMPASSIONATE BREAST CANCER SURVIVORS

When you devote your time to the MLC Cancer Foundation in Martinsville, Virginia, you're joining the battle against ovarian and breast cancer. In less than thirty days after its inception, our organization garnered recognition and support from both the Martinsville Bulletin and a local television affiliate. Founded by a resilient three-year breast cancer survivor, our mission is to ensure that those who receive a cancer diagnosis have access to the treatment and support they need. DRIVEN BY A HEARTFELT MISSION

Our founder's journey began with the loss of her grandmother to cancer, a tragedy that struck her family repeatedly with diagnoses. In response, she made a heartfelt commitment to provide unwavering support to her loved ones. Inspired by her mother's strength and determination, she co-founded this nonprofit organization, driven by the desire to extend the same invaluable support to others in need. Given the prevalence of cancer diagnoses in our region, our dedicated team shares a resolute mission: to raise awareness, promote healthy dietary choices, and encourage proactive testing to combat this pervasive challenge. 🎀 Join us for A Pink Event — and hear why Chandler says you should be there! 🎀

“I’ve been going to A Pink Event since I was little. It brought our community together every October to learn, share, and spread breast cancer awareness. I’m in college now at Duke (biology + psychology), and I’m super sad I can’t make it this year—but you should. It’s informative, inspiring, and a powerful way to support those fighting and honor survivors.”

The MLC Cancer Foundation

The MLC Cancer Foundation is a non-profit, tax-exempt organization that offers resources for financial assistance to cancer patients to cover expenses incurred due to diagnosis. In addition to financial support, the foundation educates all on preventative options and genetic testing benefits for the entire family.

The foundation was formed by founders Patricia Via and daughter Telesa Via in 2012. After Patricia’s mother, Myrtle Lee Carter, passed away due to cancer, Patricia was diagnosed herself with the disease. Shortly after being diagnosed, Patricia made the decision to to have genetic mutation testing done to determine the strategy for her treatment. Patricia learned not only was she, but many of her family members had the BRCA2 gene.

After beating the disease and starting their foundation Patricia and Telesa focused their attention on their hometown of Martinsville, VA. The city has the highest cancer rate in the state of Virginia. Benefiting from genetic mutation testing during her battle, The MLC Foundation partnered with Ambry Genetics and The Mauli Ola Foundation. Patricia and Telesa were awarded $50,000 in vouchers for genetic testing.

The MLC Cancer foundation also provides direct and indirect financial assistance to cancer patients through their treatment journey. This assistance includes some medical expenses, travel for those patients needing treatment away from their location, grant research to find government programs and organizations that help offset expenses incurred due to treatment. Prevention education such as diet, exercise, and spiritual growth are also provided by the foundation.
