History & Programs

CHAMP Assistance Dogs incorporated as a non-profit organization in January of 1998. CHAMP is an acronym that stands for Canine Helpers Allow More Possibilities. CHAMP is a fully-accredited service dog organization through Assistance Dogs International (ADI). Service Dog Program- CHAMP trains and places service dogs to empower children and adults with physical and cognitive disabilities. Service dogs enhance their partner’s life skills and help with tasks such as; opening and closing doors, turning light switches on and off, picking up dropped items, removing clothing, and augmenting physical therapy while increasing their partner’s independence, confidence and self-esteem. Facility Dogs-These specially trained dogs work with professional care givers at pediatric hospitals, child advocacy centers and serve as Courthouse Dogs. A dog working in a child advocacy center or courtroom can provide comfort to a child during a forensic interview or when a child is faced with the difficult task of confronting their abuser in court. A facility dog, working in a hospital, can ease a patient’s anxiety and stimulate healing and recovery. Prison Program- CHAMP and the Missouri Department of Corrections participates a win-win partnership that begin in 2002. Offenders in a Women’s prison in Vandalia, MO, gain valuable vocational skills while training service dogs and giving back to the community. The CHAMP Prison Program focuses on confidence building, problem solving skills, teamwork, open communication and the use of positive reinforcements. The skills that the women offenders learn while working in the CHAMP Prison Program will prepare them for reintegration in the community. Therapy Dog Program—CHAMP visits more than 20,000 children and adults in hospitals, rehab centers and other facilities on a yearly basis. Interactions with a therapy dog team can provide emotional and physical health benefits. A connection between a human and a dog often helps individuals forget about their suffering, even if for only a moment. Education Program-CHAMP Assistance dogs offers unique education programs for children and adults. Presentations are individually designed, teach respect for people of all abilities and help individuals gain understanding of various disabilities. Volunteer Opportunities: CHAMP Assistance Dogs operates with a small staff that relies upon the help and expertise of more than 120 active volunteers. Volunteers help CHAMP fulfil its mission, reach program goals and keep operating costs at a minimum. The majority of CHAMP volunteers serve on Therapy Dog Teams and visit hospitals, rehab centers, assisted living centers, the USO and many other facilities. Enthusiastic and dedicated volunteers help raise puppies for CHAMP, serve on special event committees, assist with building maintenance and help with office tasks. Whatever path you choose as a CHAMP volunteer, your efforts will make a significant difference.

Am I doing this right?

Am I being consistent enough?

Will all of this work amount to something meaningful?

Will this puppy really make a difference?

Whether a puppy is learning house meaners in a volunteer's living room or polishing advanced skills in our prison program, the thoughts behind the leash are strikingly similar. Puppy raisers pour their hearts into early socialization, late night potty breaks, and teaching the foundations. Resident trainers take that foundation and shape it into life changing reliable service tasks. Different roles, but with the same hope.

Both lie awake replaying the day's training. Both celebrate tiny wins. Both feel the weight of responsibility. And both love a dog who, one day, won't be theirs anymore.

That's the beauty of this journey. It's never just one person raising or training a service dog. It's a chain of hands, hearts, and homes.

So if you're asking yourself whether you're doing enough or doing it right, know this: you're not alone in those questions.

They mean you care. And caring is where the difference begins.

This kind of love has no calories, no wrappers, and no expiration date: just loyalty and a whole lot of heart. Love comes in many forms, and the dogs in our program share unconditional love with everyone they touch, changing lives one connection at a time. Happy Valentine’s Day from all of us at CHAMP Assistance Dogs.🐾❤️

This is a completely inclusive, non-competitive 5K in memory of Brian J. Smith, a CHAMP volunteer who was a beloved husband, father, cousin, friend, and son. This event is hosted by Brian's family, to raise money for CHAMP.

You can participate HOW you want, WHEN you want. In the past, participants rolled, ran, biked, walked, jogged, danced, ice skated, and swam. You are welcome to register for the “Virtual 5K”, to participate on your own—when/where/how you choose. Or, if you would like to participate in a group activity, you are welcome to register for the in-person option, which will take place on Sunday March 1st in Creve Coeur Park. The group will meet at 10:00am at Tremayne Shelter in Creve Coeur Park, and then head out on the trail to walk, jog, run, bike, roll, or whatever you like. Dogs on leash are welcome! At the in-person event on 3/1/26, there will also be free drawings for prizes!

Class is in!!! Whether the pups are in group class, the institution, or at drop off days they are working on skills to help them be a successful partner for their future client.

The Parks Litter is now in their Basic stage of training where they will hone basic obedience skills. Gunny is showing off his go mat, Mesa is practicing sit, and Arch is waiting to come out of the kennel with the door open.

Can you believe these pups are under 6 months? We can! Great job to their raisers and resident trainers working in tandem.
