What Are You Really Getting When You Buy Supplements Online?

Here is some important information to share with your patients.
Researchers from the University of Mississippi and the Uniformed Services University tested 30 immune-supporting supplements bought on Amazon and found that only 13 actually contained what was claimed on the product’s label.1
Researchers searched Amazon for the keyword immune in “all departments,” then filtered the results by “featured” to look at which products came up. Then, the researchers chose the first 30 dietary supplement products that were rated with four or more stars.
Researchers purchased one sample of each product and sent it to the University of Mississippi’s National Center for Natural Products Research to be analyzed.
The first step was to look at what the product labels claimed was in the product—that is, the list of ingredients. Then, the researchers tested the products to find out what was actually in the bottle and compared those results to what the labels said.
After testing 30 supplements, the researchers found that:
· 17 products had inaccurate labels
· 13 labels listed ingredients that were not detected in the actual product
· 9 products had substances in them that were not listed on the labels
· 15 product labels had “scientific-sounding” claims on them that used terms like “research-based” or “research-supported,” but there was no substantial evidence to back up those claims.
In other words, for consumers who purchased any of those 30 products from Amazon, there was a good chance they were misled.
Fungi Perfecti discovers counterfeit products with allergens on Amazon
Analysis reportedly confirmed that four Host Defense capsule products are being imitated:MyCommunity 120-ct, Stamets 7 120-ct, Lion’s Mane 120-ct, and Turkey Tail 120-ct. At first glance, these counterfeit products looked like Host Defense.
Importantly, lab analysis yielded positive test results for two known allergens: soy and gluten.
“All authentic Host Defense Mushrooms supplements are gluten-free and not formulated with soy,” said the company.
NOW alerts Amazon to counterfeit supplement on its platform
Alerted by concerned consumers, NOW recently discovered multiple fraudulent supplements sold on Amazon impersonating the NOW brand as well as another prominent supplement brand.
The company discovered 11 different counterfeit NOW supplements on Amazon USA.
At first glance, these counterfeit products looked like NOW supplements, but closer inspection showed that the packaging, labels, and contents were falsified.
Some of the items were listed on Amazon as tablets or softgels, but consumers received small white #1 capsules, with an odorless white powder, which, after further analysis, was found to be white rice flour.
NOW also reportedly found trace amounts of the pharmaceutical Sildenafil in some samples
PLEASE beware of purchasing supplements on Amazon.
