We need to advocate more
Former Illinois Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. is opening up about the emotional toll of caregiving for his father, the Rev. Jesse Jackson, as he battles Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP). In a heartfelt message, the former Illinois Congressman reflects on the past five years spent supporting his father alongside his siblings. Describing the experience as “brutal, formative, and eye-opening,” he highlights the mental, emotional, and financial strain it has placed on their family. His sister, Jackie Jr., has even put her teaching career on hold to become a full-time caregiver. As Thanksgiving approaches, Jackson Jr. calls attention to the unsung heroes of the caregiving community, urging Americans to recognize their sacrifices and advocate for policy changes to support them.

Home health and in-home care are often mistaken for one another, but they serve different purposes. Home health delivers medical care at home under a doctor’s order, while in-home care provides nonmedical support with daily tasks to promote independence. Knowing the difference helps you choose the right care for your needs.

Malik, a caregiver from Right at Home Northern Lake County, has shown great commitment to improving the quality of life of Shane, a client living with frontal temporal dementia. After Shane’s wife passed suddenly in December 2023, his sister Tracy and aunt assumed responsibility for his care and partnered with Right at Home until Shane could relocate to Minnesota. From the very beginning, Malik distinguished himself by establishing a consistent daily routine for Shane, a task that had proven challenging for other caregivers due to the severity of his condition. Malik’s ability to bring structure and stability provided Shane with comfort during a time of profound change.
Malik’s dedication went far beyond routine care. He organized and personally completed the office’s first-ever client road trip, driving Shane to Minnesota to visit Tracy. The journey was a success and included a special visit to the Mall of America, where Shane—an avid walker averaging 12,000 steps a day—was able to enjoy an activity he loves. While Shane may not remember the experience, it created cherished memories for Tracy and for Malik himself. Malik’s compassion, creativity, and unwavering commitment exemplify the Right at Home mission to improve the quality of life for those we serve. His efforts are a reminder that going the extra mile can make all the difference.

Many veterans need help at home as they get older. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) offers benefit programs that help cover the cost of this care. The challenge is knowing what’s available and how to get it.
Step one is getting enrolled in VA health care. From there, eligibility depends on your service record, any service-connected disabilities, income, and the level of help you need at home. Every program has its own rules, so knowing the basics can make the process smoother.

We offer in-home non-medical care to seniors and disabled adults in Snohomish County, WA. Our goal is to meet the specific needs of each of our clients by devising custom care plans. Proudly serving Snohomish County for the past 10 years.
Mark and I wish to thank you for taking the time to find out a little more about the team that will be personally responsible for the care of your loved one. While Right at Home is caring for over 10,000 clients around the world, your concern is about the care and coverage you will receive here in Snohomish County. Our office is a family owned and operated business that is totally committed to improving the quality of life for our clients and their families and for assuring your comfort as a family member that your loved one is well cared for. We are one of four Right at Home offices covering Washington State and among nearly 400 professionally franchised businesses of Right at Home, Inc., a senior home care company providing service since 1995.
Mark and Vicki Johnston, took on the challenge of building a company to serve their local communities and to be part of the solution to the current economic crisis and provide jobs to those in need. Mark comes to this business with over 11 years of service to his country in the United States Navy. Graduating in 1983 from the US Naval Academy, he served onboard submarines until 1995, when he and Vicki made the decision to move their family back to Washington State. While working in manufacturing for over 14 years, Mark went back to school and earned his MBA at University of Washington. In 2009, he and Vicki made the decision to open their own company after the economic toll took its turn to eliminate his manufacturing facility. Desiring to stay in the local area, he wanted to make a difference in his community and be able to serve his country once again. Mark continues to work part-time in the business using his skills to support the office on the payroll and billing side.
My grandmother Jessica, “Nana” lived to be 100.5 and she took care of my grandfather, Joseph “Poppy” for 9 years at home with a private nurse. This was the catalyst for looking at a home care business. The last 8 years of owning and running a local business for the communities of Snohomish and North King Counties has been a privilege and honor.
The business is based on RESPONSIVENESS, INTEGRITY, HONESTY and PROFESSIONALISM.
We are part of the “sandwich generation” and understand first-hand the challenges that occur as our parent’s age and require additional assistance.
Our heart is with the elderly as reflected by our active involvement in the Snohomish County senior community. Vicki is a member of the Everett Lions Club, an EASC investor, a Virtual Dementia Tour Facilitator for Second Wind Dreams, newly certified as a Positive Approach to Caregiving Trainer and has been a past committee member for the Alzheimer's Organization for the annual walk in Everett, Washington.
Whether your needs are for the care of an aging family member, assistance after a hospital stay, as a respite for a spouse or family member, or simply companionship for an elder loved one, Right at Home will meet your needs. We provide free, in-home consultations that will match your schedule
