What is adjustment disorder?

According to the DSM 5 an adjustment disorder can happen when someone develops emotional or behavioral symptoms in response to an identifiable stressor within 3 months of that stressor happening. Symptoms cause significant distress and impairment in areas of functioning, they do not meet criteria for another disorder and symptoms do not persist for more than 6 months after the stressor/its consequences end.
