United Healthcare Medicare Advantage HMO plans require a referral to see a specialist as of April 1, 2026. THIS INCLUDES SPECIALISTS YOU ARE ALREADY ESTABLISHED WITH! Examples but not limited to-
*Cardiology
*Neurology
*Endocrinology

If you have an advantage plan and see a specialist, UHC needs to approve before you can see your specialist. Mullock Health Care will need to send a referral request to avoid denied payments to your specialist.

**Traditional Medicare does not require referrals, no changes or additional processing required. This is only for Advantage Plans.

These are definitely denials and delays we have seen with Medicare Advantage plans. We’ve sent people home from nursing homes bc the insurance didn’t feel it was needed.
