As the beautiful Northern Iowa fall gives way to winter, it's the perfect time to make sure your home is safe and ready! Did you know that falls are the leading cause of injury among older adults? We want to help our neighbors stay safe and independent this season.

We're launching our Comfort & Safety Check to help you identify and fix simple hazards around the house using the CDC's proven checklist!

Focus on these areas today:

📶 Stairs & Steps: Fix loose handrails or put them on both sides of the stairs. Keep objects off the steps and ensure they are well-lit.

🚻 Bathrooms: Put grab bars next to and inside the tub, and next to the toilet, for crucial support.

🏠 Floors: Remove throw rugs, or use double-sided tape so they won't slip.

Approximately 12% of all new cancer diagnoses in Iowa will be lung cancer in 2025. That’s the 3rd highest type of cancer that affects Iowans. The rate of new lung cancer cases is 80 per 100,000 among Black Iowans. This is significantly higher than the 63 per 100,000 among white Iowans according to the American Lung Association’s State of Lung Cancer report for 2024.
