Chester “Larry” May, Jr., 68, of Somerset, KY, passed peacefully into the arms of his Lord, early Sunday morning, December 7, 2025, while an inpatient in the Jean Waddle Care Center of Somerset, KY.

Born September 3, 1957, in Williamson, WV, Larry was the son of the late Chester Lawrence May, Sr. and Estel Mae (Evans) May. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving stepmother, Henrietta Collins May, and his sister, Mary “Libby” Bevins Scott.

Larry was a proud member of Cornerstone Church of Hatfield Bottom, Matewan, WV, where his faith was an anchor throughout his life. He was known as a hard worker, a provider, and a man who showed his love not only in words but in everyday actions. Over the years, Larry held several positions that reflected his strong work ethic and dedication. He served as Store Manager for Quality Foods of McCarr, KY, for over six years, and later as Store Manager for Family Dollar for about five years, where he became a familiar and friendly face to many in the community. He went on to work as a loader/operator for East Anderson Hardwood of Eubank, KY, for eight years. Whether managing a store or operating heavy equipment, Larry gave his best and took pride in a job well done.

Larry’s greatest joy, however, was found at home and in the hills, creeks, and quiet places he loved. He had a deep love for music and could often be found with a guitar in his hands, picking out a tune and lifting the spirits of those around him. He also enjoyed fishing, taking in the peace of the water, the company of family and friends, and the simple satisfaction of the catch. Above all, he was a devoted family man who did everything he could to take care of those he loved. Providing for his family was not just a responsibility to him; it was his calling and his pride.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Peggy May of Waynesburg, KY, who walked by his side through life’s joys and challenges. He is also survived by his son, Matt Lawrence May and his wife Tori of Waynesburg, KY, who carry forward his strength, humor, and love; and his beloved grandchildren, who were the light of his later years: Auroria May of Waynesburg, KY, and Alex and Zack Adkins of Switzer, WV. Papaw Larry’s stories, smiles, and gentle guidance will live on in them.

Larry is also survived by his brother, Noah May and his wife Debby of Science Hill, KY; his sisters, Linda May of Belo, WV, Teresa May of Belo, WV, and Sandra Cummins and her husband Rick of Harroldburg, KY; brothers-in-law, Kenny Hensley of Pikeville, KY, and Daniel “Big D” Hensley of Thacker, WV; and sisters-in-law, Joyce Patton and her husband John of North Carolina, and Norma Clark of North Matewan, WV. He leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, neighbors, and friends who will remember his easy smile, his willingness to lend a hand, his quiet strength, and the way he could make people feel welcome and cared for. To know Larry was to know a man who loved deeply, worked honestly, and lived simply but fully.

The family will begin receiving friends on Thursday, December 11, 2025, from 6 to 9 pm in the Cornerstone Church of Rt. 49 Hatfield Bottom, Matewan, WV 25678.

Honoring services will be held at the church on Friday, December 12, 2025, beginning at 11 am, with Pastor Thomas Whitt officiating. Burial will then follow in the Clark Family Cemetery of Merrimac, WV, with family and friends serving as pallbearers.

Fannie Keith, age 90, of Matewan, WV, passed away peacefully at her home early Thursday morning, October 16, 2025. Born on April 25, 1935, in Lynn, WV, Fannie was a beloved daughter to the late Walter and Pearl (Mills) Varney. Fannie spent a lifetime dedicated to her faith, family, and community. She had a special way of making a town feel like home and neighbors feel like family.

In addition to her parents, Fannie was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Edward “Tag” Keith; her first husband, Ray Holland; brothers, Alfred Varney, Ronald Varney, and Paul Varney; and sisters Wanda Whitt, Rickie Roberson, Madonna Hatfield, and Joyce Huff.

For more than 50 years, she anchored her days in faith as an avid member of the Sprigg Freewill Baptist Church, where her steadfast love for the Lord spilled into every meal delivered, every phone call made, and every porch visit shared. She also spent many wonderful years with her husband, Tag. You could often find them laughing, singing, and dancing together - theirs was truly a love story for the ages.

Whether working at Superior Electric, the Appalachian Power Company, or concluding her career at Matewan National Bank, Fannie carried the same integrity, kindness, and devotion into her work as she did in her home and community - quiet, steady, and full of love and grace.

If Christmas lights could tell stories, the streets of Matewan would recite Fannie’s name with a twinkle. Alongside her sister Madonna, her husband Tag, brother-in-law Ted, and their family, she helped dress the town for holidays, especially Christmas, leaving her unmistakable touch of class and joy on every light, ribbon and wreath. On soft Appalachian evenings, you could often find her on the back porch, gently swaying in her porch swing with Tag, sharing laughter and tall tales with Madonna, Ted, sister-in-law Gaynell, and anyone else who happened to stop by. All were welcome, because to know Fannie was to feel seen, accepted, and loved. Only heaven will fully reveal the reach of her generosity and humility.

Fannie is lovingly remembered by her sister Faye Hatfield, her brothers James T. Varney and Clinton Varney, and her daughters in love, Dreama Thornsbury and Peggy Harper; She is also dearly remembered by her special sister-in-law Gaynell Varney and niece Paula Varney, special brother-in-law Ted Hatfield and nephew Jeff Hatfield; as well as Sharon Roberson-Cooper, Pam Whitt, and Lori Varney, along with a host of other nieces, nephews, and friends.

The family extends heartfelt gratitude to her devoted caregivers, Tim and Melissa Johnson, Charlena Smith, and Flora Ratliff, and to treasured friends, Fran Mitchem Keefer, DJ Keefer, Shane Keefer, Brayden Mitchem, Adien Mitchem, and Joe Mitchem, whose companionship brightened so many of her days.

The family will begin receiving friends on Sunday, October 19, 2025 in the Sprigg Freewill Baptist Church, 218 Country Club Drive, Sprigg, WV, from 6pm to 9pm.

Honoring services will be held at the church on Monday, October 20, 2025, beginning at 1pm with Pastor Dallas Rife officiating. Fannie will be laid to rest at the Varney Cemetery in Lynn, WV, with family and friends serving as pallbearers.

The porch light of her life now shines from a higher hill, but its warmth remains, glowing in the hearts of all who were blessed to call her family, friend, and neighbor.
