Matewan, W.Va., is proud of their heritage you will find the area not only rich in history but the families that make up our community are welcoming and encourage all to visit this landmark city. The funeral home was founded by the Reams family and was operated under the name of Reams Funeral Home. In 1963 a new facility was completed on Route 49 Hatfield bottom on the outskirts of the downtown area; and the name was changed to Chambers Funeral Home. Upon completion of the new building in 1963, Chambers Funeral Home was operated and managed by William “Bill” and his wife Kathleen Taylor. For over 40 years the Taylor family served the surrounding areas of Matewan, W.Va., with care; professionalism; and hometown hospitality. In 2003, Booney M. Hayes and Ernest Casebolt purchased the funeral home from the Taylor family maintaining the original name of Chambers. Although the funeral home is under new management the concept of service and caring remains the same and even stronger. Our facility has been redesigned so that we may serve our families proficiently during their darkest hour. For over 60 years Chambers has served this community and will continue to strive to serve each family with compassion and affordability. We our proud of the fact that our funeral home is still independently owned and operated by local individuals who can relate to the area and the families that we serve.

Sgt. James Dotson “Jungle Jim”, 75, of Edgarton, West Virginia, passed away March 4, 2026 at 10:30 PM at Pikeville Medical Center surrounded by the love of his family. He was born February 2, 1951 to the late James Dotson and Bessie Murphy Dotson. Sgt. Dotson was a proud United States Army veteran who served his country during the Vietnam War from 1970–1973, earning the rank of Sergeant and receiving the Bronze Star Medal, the Combat Infantryman Badge (CIB), Airborne wings, air medal, Vietnam Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal for his service. Known to many as “Jungle Jim,” he carried great pride in his service and in the brotherhood he formed with the men who stood beside him. The bonds created during war lasted a lifetime, and he often spoke of the men he considered his brothers.

He leaves behind three of those brothers-in-arms, Satch, Lt., and P.R., and now reunites with his fellow serviceman and brother, the late Perrin, who preceded him in death. After returning home, he dedicated over 20 years working as a coal miner, providing for his family through hard work, strength, and determination. His faith meant a great deal to him, and he was recently baptized, giving his life to the Lord and praying daily. When he was able, he loved the outdoors, deer hunting and squirrel hunting, riding his ATV while checking on the cows, and spending time outside. He also loved vacationing with his family in Myrtle Beach where many cherished memories were made.

James shared a beautiful life with the love of his life, his wife of 47 years, Darlene Dotson, a bond that was rarely seen as they stood beside one another through every season of life. Those left to cherish his memory include his loving wife Darlene Dotson; his daughters Brandy (Jackie) Sturgeon and Jessica (Kyle); his grandchildren Breanna (Alex), Haleigh (Dakota), Kyler, Zaylee, and Liam; his brothers Richard (Sherry) Dotson and Edward Dotson; his sister Lena Mae Blackburn; along with many nieces, nephews, and extended family who loved him dearly. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter Heather Lynn Dotson and his brothers Herbert Dotson and Albert Dotson. To those who loved him most, he was Babe, Daddy and Papaw JD, titles that meant everything to him. Even in his final moments he was never alone, as his family held his hands and told him they loved him until his last breath. He served his country with honor, lived his life with strength, and loved his family with his whole heart. He was our protector, our hero, and the strongest man we have ever known, and until we meet again Daddy, we love you and know your love will live on in each of us forever. 🙏🇺🇸
