If you’re seeing these pretty little purple flowers pop up in your yard right now then you’re more than likely seeing wild violets (Viola sororia). These little flowers aren’t just pretty, they are also useful! Violets have been used in traditional herbalism for a very long time. The leaves and flowers are edible and extremely rich in vitamins A and C. They have a mild flavor that makes them good in salads, soups, and used as a garnish. The flowers also make a delicious syrup and jelly. 🍯
Violets also are a demulcent. This means that they are great for dry coughs, sore throats, and many other things. They are also anti-inflammatory and are excellent for the lymphatic system.
If you decide to harvest your own always make sure you have the correct herb and that they are from a spray-free area. 💜
