American Heart Month Facts!

Did you know that people who have close relationships at home, work, or in their community tend to be healthier and live longer? One reason is that we're more successful at meeting our health goals when we work on them with others.

Aim for a healthy weight- Find someone in your friend group, at work, or in your family who also wants to reach or maintain a healthy weight. Check in with them regularly to stay motivated. Agree to do healthy activities, like walking or cooking a healthy meal at the same time.

Beyond structured physical activity, it's important to keep it moving throughout the day, as well. IF you do sit for a good portion of the day, make sure to stand up and stretch periodically. This can help improve your blood circulation and reduce your risk of blood clots.

American Heart Month, I encourage all Americans to take control of their heart health by better understanding and monitoring their blood pressure levels and making healthy lifestyle changes that can significantly reduce their risk of serious health consequences associated with high blood pressure.

Reduce your intake of processed foods, especially those with added sodium and sugar-making simple dietary changes can help you manage or prevent high blood pressure, including eating less sodium, red meat and processed meats, reducing the amount of packaged, processed foods you consume-especially those with added sodium and sugar. Eat foods that are rich in potassium and add more plant-based food, such as olive oil, nuts and seeds to your diet.

Maintaining a healthy weigh, blood pressure an total cholesterol play a significant role in maintaining a healthy heart. While there are standard guideline for blood pressure and cholesterol, ideal weight goals are individual to each person. A physician can help determine an appropriate goal weight based on additional factors such as age and height.

So get moving!

Your heart is a muscle and as with any muscle, exercise is what strengthens it.

The fist step is to determine your target heart rate, then find an activity you enjoy and can stick with for the long run.

Reduce Stress!

Long-term (chronic) emotional stress may contribute to high blood pressure. More research is need don the effects of stress reduction techniques to find out whether they can reduce blood pressure.

It can't hurt to determine what causes stress, such as work, family, finances or illness, and find ways to reduce stress.

Avoid trying to do too much. Plan your day and focus on your priorities. Learn to say no. Allow enough time to get done what needs to be done.

Exercise regularly!

Regular physical activity can lower high blood pressure by about 5 to h mm Hg. It's important to keep exercising to keep blood pressure from rising again.

Some examples of aerobic exercise that can help lower blood pressure is walking, swimming or dancing. Strength training also can help reduce blood pressure. Aim to include strength training exercises at least two days a week.
