Four full days with Osteopath and Certified Advanced Rolfer, Ron Murray exploring “A Deeper Understanding of the Pelvis”. I’ve always been drawn to the themes in Osteopathy that I’ve been exposed to over the years and these days offered a deep dive. Hands on therapists can get so side tracked with “muscles” amd the ever requested “deep tissue”. What does it mean to go deep? It’s absolutely not what most people think it is. Light work in the most superficial layers can touch so deeply when we can tune in to deep listening. Through another lens, can we listen in to the bones? Can we know our anatomy and learn skills that support bringing consciousness to bones and supporting people at deeper, more elemental layers?

Hands-on work might seem simple at a glance, but developing our tactile sense is an enormous skill that can just continue and continue to grow for practitioners over a lifetime. At the foundation , solid left brain knowledge of anatomy and knowing our palpatory anatomy-“where things are” is a critical foundation. Like any expert, over time we might “forget” those details and begin to operate from a different place. We haven’t forgotten anything. It’s become so innate, that we don’t have to hold it front and center. At this stage it’s less about scales and music begins to emerge.

Working with scar tissue and fascial restrictions, really is best served when we get to this place. We can allow our mind to move a little sideways and feel in-through the three dimensional aspect of the human being. Sharon Wheeler’s ScarWork really cultivates this state. So grateful for this work.

If we can already get up and down and down and up, we might wonder why we should bother over the details?

Underneath the threshold of effort, and working with what is easy in a range that is easily reversible-will immediately begin to offer improvement to the areas that are less easy.
This is a difficult approach for many people to accept because going hard into the hard place is a treasured cultural belief that is nurtured often from our earliest beginnings.

To refine your movement is to change your brain. When we explore this approach, we begin to see the truth of preferentially attending to what is easy as a door into healing what is difficult.

It’s not a “belief”. It’s science. It’s the nervous system. It’s the laws of the universe acting on us in every moment. Whether we choose to know about them and work within those laws, is another question entirely.

What is our path from standing to sitting? Standing to the floor? Lying down to standing and all the transitions of position?

The integrative quality of whole body spiral movements have tremendous potential to restore easy, pain free movements that that we might have “lost”.

I’m working on the final requirement to become a trainer of teachers in Ruthy Alon’s Movement Intelligence program. Drawn on her life long experience as a Senior Trainer and teacher of the Feldenkrais Method, Ruthy contributed a body of her own work to the movement disciplines. Her work is direct and curious. It offers practical applications to real life. First-organize the system! Ideal organization, means immediately we have profound strength.

Three years, personal consultations, case consultations, one to one and group mentoring sessions, 9 modules of 4-7 days with groups of other human beings that were as large as 60 or so people at a time…and this step is completed. Somatic Experiencing Practioner 🙏🙏❤️‍🩹 . I learned so much over this program that a post doesn’t really seem to hold, and yet we still need to say something! 😊 I’m not a fan of praise or accolades, not because I dislike standing in a little light-but because I feel so strongly as a practitioner, that each person has incredible personal potential to expand far beyond what we can sometimes imagine. If it could be possible, I’d only offer this inner light, the power of agency and capacity to each person who reached out to me. Just a little, I feel like “yes, these years were a definite thing”. A commitment, a humbling of myself, not only to learn but to try to show up and help others on the same journey of life. Peter Levine’s work , is deeply valuable work for our world. I encourage practitioners to explore this work and humans everywhere to know that body-centered trauma work holds promise for transformation. Join us on Mondays 3:30-4:30 PM Eastern time-beginning August 11th for a revolving virtual series of movement explorations from Ruthy Alon’s Movement Intelligence work. Why take this class? It’s a long list. Although Movement Intellgience is a Feldenkrais (R) informed discipline, it can be incredibly helpful in many ways. Here are a few!

Sometimes it seems like the modern world is too much to naviagate with all our many problems and other times it feels like there isn’t enough lifetime to live to learn all the possible things we could learn. I’m so grateful to have spent a lifetime learning from so many people, in disciplines that support and help the world 🌎. In June I’ll be headed right back out for a week in Elkhart, Indiana to learn BoneWork with Rolfer, and ScarWork creator, Sharon Wheeler. Deeply attuned and oriented toward offering what is good.

We are so grateful for each other and for the people who came to offer their time, stories and spirit for us these past four days so that we could practice and learn together.
