Today, the purple Gift of Hope flag flies at Sarah Bush Lincoln. This quiet but powerful symbol that a life-saving gift is being given.

This flag is flown at our main entrance whenever there is an organ or tissue donation. It represents compassion, generosity, and a legacy that lives on through others.

This moment is especially meaningful as April is National Donate Life Month. In honor of donors and their families, our campus lights will shine purple this weekend, which serves as a visible reminder of the lives touched by these extraordinary gifts.

Today our staff paused to honor today’s donation. In a moving show of respect and gratitude, SBL team members lined the halls from the ICU to the OR—standing together for an honor walk to recognize this selfless decision and the impact it will have on so many lives.

Joe & Sheila Dively of Charleston have donated $25,000 to “Expanding Hope,” a Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Foundation Capital Campaign to help fund the expansion of the Regional Cancer Center. Construction on the $17.2 million addition began earlier this month.

“Joe and Sheila have been wonderful supporters of Sarah Bush Lincoln for many years,” said Kim Uphoff, SBL President & CEO. “Not only have they donated so generously to many projects and programs here, they’ve also served in leadership roles. Joe served as Chairman of the Sarah Bush Lincoln Health System Board of Directors and has been a member of several capital campaign committees, including this one. Sheila is a Guild Volunteer and is a charter member of WomenConnected, one of the largest women’s giving circle devoted to healthcare in the Midwest. We’re so grateful to them and for this most recent donation!”

Once the 15,000 square-foot expansion is complete, the Regional Cancer Center will include 34 chemotherapy infusion bays, expanded treatment areas, eight new exam rooms, a larger waiting room, and additional parking. Dedicated space will also be created for non-oncology medical infusion services, treating conditions such as Crohn’s disease, immune deficiencies, Multiple Sclerosis and neuromuscular disorders.

“Shelia and I are proud to support the expansion of the Regional Cancer Center that’s provided care to many of our friends and family members,” said Joe Dively. “When we learned that patient visits to the cancer center had doubled in just five years, there was no doubt that we wanted to contribute. This region is truly blessed to have the kind of quality cancer care that we do – care that you normally find in a large, metro area. I hope that many others contribute to this project if they’re able.”

Congratulations to Randy Beck, RN, who is retiring after 34 years at Sarah Bush Lincoln. Randy began working at SBL in 1992, starting in the Emergency Department. After a few years there, he moved to cardiology (working in METS) and worked there for more than 20 years.

“The funny thing is, when my wife Peggy and I moved here originally, we thought we would stay here for five years or so. We wanted to move to Oregon, which is where Peggy is from,” he explained. “We enjoyed living here and found a great school system for our children, so we stayed. I’m very glad we did.”

Randy has been with SBL during times of tremendous growth and expansion. “I was here to see the Heart Center go up, and now we have electrophysiology as a service line. The growth is astounding.” Peggy, who was also a nurse, retired a few years ago, and now is the right time for Randy to join her in retirement.

Though he is starting a new chapter, he will definitely miss the people who helped make up the SBL chapter of his life. “All of my co-workers have been fantastic, and I will definitely miss that great group of people,” he said. “I’m also going to miss my patients a lot. I got to work with amazing people in rehab who were dedicated to recovering, and I enjoyed caring for them and supporting them.”
