Dorothy was born July 28, 1929, in Mattoon, Illinois, the fourth child and first daughter of Miner Rose and Flora Alice “Florence” (Clark) Douglas. She married S. Boyd Phillips on September 24,1950, at the Loxa Presbyterian Church. He preceded her in death on March 31, 1985. She was also preceded in death by her loving parents, one infant daughter, Carol Ann Phillips: son, Gary Lee Phillips and son, Ronald William “Bill” Phillips. Three brothers: Horace Clark (Mae) Douglas, Paul Howard (Lib) Douglas and James Harold “Jay” (Arlene) Douglas.
Her greatest joy in life came from her family. Because her first and strongest love was that for her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, she was able to give to her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren the truest, deepest and most unselfish kind of love.
Dorothy is survived by three daughters; Judith (William) Norberg of Bonney Lake, WA; Linda (Monty) Carpenter of Kingman, AZ; Lana (Roger) Hill of Mattoon, IL; one son, Charles (Dorinda) Phillips of Mattoon, IL; and one daughter-in-law Phyllis Phillips of Mattoon, IL. Grandsons: Michael (Allison) Phillips of Arcola, IL; Mark (Catherine) Phillips of Mattoon, IL; Alan (Jill) Hill of Auburn, AL. Granddaughters: Julia (Steve) Willert, of Auburn, WA; Jean (Scott) Jones of Puyallup, WA; Hollie (Michael) Christacopulos of Kingman, AZ; Rachel Hill of Mattoon, IL; Sara (Tracy) Colbert of Kingman, AZ; Jennifer Hill of Neoga, IL; 8 great grandsons; 6 great granddaughters and 2 great, great granddaughters. She is also survived by one brother-in-law, Kenneth Phillips of Mattoon, several nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.
She graduated from Mattoon High School in 1947. Following high school, Dorothy went to work as a night dispatcher for A & B Transfer Trucking Company in Mattoon. In 1958, she started what would be a 30 plus year career in banking, beginning at First National Bank in Mattoon, which later became First Mid Illinois Bank and Trust. In 1971, after 13 years at First Mid, she and Boyd moved to Bethany, Illinois, and Dorothy went to work at Scott State Bank there. Upon retirement as a Bank Officer from Scott State Bank, she didn’t have any desire to stay home so she worked for a few years for her son-in-law, Monty Carpenter, in his printing business. From there she worked as the Hostess in the restaurant at Rockhome Gardens in rural Arthur until the time it closed. She still wasn’t ready to leave the workforce and started working for Donna Meaker in the office at Sears Department Store, where she was responsible for getting the stores’ daily cash counted and deposits made…. back to the “banking” she loved so much. When that Sears store closed its doors in late April 2014, Dorothy finally retired. She was 84.
Dorothy also found the time throughout the years to serve her community through her commitments to various clubs and organizations. Before becoming a member of First Presbyterian Church in Mattoon, she had been a lifelong member of the Loxa Presbyterian Church where she served as Church pianist for several years, was a member of the Loxa Trio and belonged to the Loxa Ladies Aide. After transferring membership to First Church, she served in several different capacities, was a member of the choir and belonged to the ladies’ clubs there. She is a past member of PEO and also served on the Board of Directors for Titus Home in Sullivan, Illinois, for several years. Dorothy was an avid reader and belonged to several different book clubs throughout the years. She was a staunch fan of college basketball, especially the Big Ten and the Fighting Illini – March was her favorite sports month!
Donations in her honor may be made to Mattoon Food Bank, MCUSD #2 weekend lunch and/or after school programs, or to First Presbyterian Church Music Department.
