🌿 Pet Safety Pop Quiz! 🐱

Which of these plants is poisonous to cats?

A️- Marigolds
B️- Tomato plants

Think you know the answer? 👀

⬇️

⬇️

⬇️

Answer: Both can be a problem for cats. ⚠️

🌼 Marigolds can cause stomach upset in cats if ingested, and the sap may also cause skin irritation.

🍅 Tomato plants (especially the leaves and stems) contain solanine, which is toxic to cats and can cause symptoms like drooling, vomiting, diarrhea, weakness, and lethargy.

With spring planting season here, it’s a great reminder to check that the plants in your home and garden are safe for curious kitties who might take a nibble. 🌱

🐾 When in doubt, look up the plant or give your vet a call before bringing it home!

🌸 Pop Quiz for Pet Parents! 🌸

Which of these common garden plants is poisonous to dogs?

A️- Petunias
B️ - Azaleas

Take your guess before scrolling… 👀

⬇️

⬇️

⬇️

Answer: Azaleas ❗

🌺 Azaleas are toxic to dogs and can cause symptoms like vomiting, diarrhea, weakness, drooling, and in severe cases, heart issues. Even small amounts can make pets sick.

🌸 Petunias, on the other hand, are considered non-toxic to dogs and are generally safe to have around your furry friends.

As spring planting starts, it’s a great time to double-check that the flowers and plants in your yard are pet-safe. A beautiful garden is even better when it’s safe for your four-legged family members! 🐾

🚗🐱 Calm, Comfortable Car Rides for Your Cat

If your cat isn’t a fan of car rides, you’re not alone. For many cats, the carrier and the car feel unfamiliar and overwhelming. With a little preparation, though, you can help make travel much more peaceful. 💙

Here are a few gentle tips to help your feline friend feel more at ease:

💚 Make the carrier a safe space. Leave it out at home with soft bedding inside so it becomes a familiar resting spot, not just something that appears before a trip.

💙 Add comforting scents. Place a favorite blanket or an item that smells like home inside the carrier. Familiar scents can be incredibly reassuring.

💚 Keep things covered. Drape a light blanket over the carrier to reduce visual stimulation and help your cat feel secure.

💙 Secure the carrier. Place it on the floorboard or buckle it in so it doesn’t shift during the ride. Stability helps reduce anxiety.

💚 Keep the environment calm. Soft voices and quiet music can make a big difference.

At Mauldin Station Vet, we know smoother car rides lead to happier visits. If your cat struggles with travel anxiety, we’re always here to help you create a plan that feels right for both of you. 💙💚

We’ll care for your feline family member every step of the way.

🐾💗 Spay Surgery & Gastropexy: Protecting Her Future

When it comes to preventive care, two surgeries can make a life-saving difference for many female dogs: spaying and, for certain breeds, a gastropexy.

🌸 Why Spay?

Spaying isn’t just about preventing pregnancy. It:
• Eliminates the risk of pyometra (a life-threatening uterine infection)
• Greatly reduces the risk of mammary cancer when done early
• Stops heat cycles and hormone-related stress
• Helps prevent unexpected litters

It’s one of the most impactful ways to protect your dog’s long-term health.

🩺 What About Gastropexy?

Large and deep-chested breeds (like Great Danes, Shepherds, Standard Poodles, etc.) are at higher risk for GDV (bloat), a sudden and life-threatening twisting of the stomach.

A preventive gastropexy tacks the stomach in place to dramatically reduce the risk of a deadly twist. It’s often performed at the same time as a spay — meaning one anesthesia event and one recovery period.

💚 The Value of Preventive Surgery

Choosing preventive procedures now can help avoid emergency surgery later. It’s about peace of mind, long-term health, and giving your dog the safest future possible.

We understand surgery is a big decision — medically and financially. If helpful, we do offer flexible payment options through Cherry to make planning a little easier. Our team is always happy to walk through what that looks like.

If you’re wondering whether your dog would benefit from a gastropexy or have questions about spay timing and recovery, we’re here to help guide you. 🐶✨

🦷🐾 Healthy Teeth = Happy Tails!

Brushing your pet’s teeth isn’t just about a bright smile — it’s about protecting their overall health. Plaque and tartar buildup can lead to painful dental disease, tooth loss, and even impact the heart, liver, and kidneys over time. Daily brushing is one of the best ways to prevent those problems before they start.

And yes… it also means sweeter kisses. 💚

🪥 Getting Started (It’s Easier Than You Think!)

✨ Use the right tools:
A soft-bristled pet toothbrush and pet-safe toothpaste (never human toothpaste). Pick a flavor your pet enjoys to make it feel like a treat, not a chore.

✨ Introduce it slowly:
Let them sniff the brush. Put a small dab of toothpaste on your finger for them to taste. Keep the first few sessions short and positive.

✨ Choose the right moment:
After playtime or a nap when they’re relaxed. Find a quiet space and stay calm — they’ll feed off your energy.

🦷 How to Brush

• Gently lift the lips
• Hold the brush at a 45° angle
• Use small, circular motions
• Focus on the outer surfaces (where plaque builds up most)
• Don’t forget the back molars

Praise, pets, and small rewards go a long way! Keep it positive so brushing becomes part of your bonding routine.

💚 Pro Tip: Consistency is Key

Daily brushing is ideal, but even a few times a week makes a difference. The goal is making it a normal, stress-free part of life.

If you’re unsure where to start, we’re happy to show you how! At Mauldin Station Vet, we can recommend products, demonstrate techniques, and help you create a plan that works for your pet.

Because dental care isn’t just hygiene — it’s love in action. 🐶🐱✨

🐾 Does your pet’s breath clear the room? 🦷

Bad breath in dogs and cats isn’t just unpleasant — it’s often a sign of dental disease. Tartar buildup, gum inflammation, and infection can cause discomfort and lead to bigger health issues if left untreated.

The good news? Dental disease is preventable!

✨ Annual professional dental cleanings
✨ Routine at-home dental care (brushing, dental treats, approved chews)

February is Pet Dental Health Month, making it the perfect time to focus on your furry friend’s smile. 🐶🐱

If you’ve noticed stinky breath, redness along the gums, or difficulty chewing, give us a call! Let’s have one of our doctors examine your pet and assess their dental health. Together, we can get that bad breath under wraps and keep those tails wagging (and purring) happily!
