Sunshine Communities

Sunshine Communities At Sunshine, each individual lives, works and plays on their terms.

Sunshine enriches the lives of people with developmental disabilities by encouraging them to expand their skills, become involved in their communities and reach their fullest potential. Sunshine Communities, founded in 1950, supports men, women and children with intellectual and developmental disabilities, offering residential, vocational and recreational services. What if the most life-changing lessons in medicine don’t start in a lecture hall—but on a playground, at summer camp?

Lauren first came to Sunshine through Notre Dame Academy + Y.E.S. Project Toledo YES Project. She thought she was signing up to volunteer. Instead, she found her calling.

Ribbon Cutting: The Common Thread🌳

Like a quilt stitched from many pieces, The Common Thread reminds us that each life, memory, and moment is part of something larger and more beautiful. Families gather here to reflect, to play, and to celebrate the ties that bind us together at Sunshine.

Individually, we are one thread. Together, we weave a masterpiece.

Connections Matter: Our best volunteers don’t always start by knowing Sunshine—they start by knowing someone who does.

Just like Chad. Dallas, Pi Kappa Phi-Toledo member introduced him to Sunshine back in college at The University of Toledo That connection stuck, and years later led them both right back here to volunteer.

Dallas shares: “I chose to volunteer at Sunshine because I deeply admire the work they do and believe in their mission wholeheartedly. I enjoy being able to spread the word about Sunshine, and our company’s volunteer day was the perfect opportunity.”

Thank you, Fishbeck!

A Story Firsthand: Recently, Mike, his father Joe, Sunshine’s spiritual life coordinator Mary Jo, and Sunshine staff member Melissa took a weekend trip to Ann Arbor to see singer-songwriter Carrie Newcomer live in concert.

In the parking-garage elevator, Mike recognized the voice of legendary University of Michigan football announcer Jim Brandstatter—and when Jim kindly stopped for a photo, Mike lit up. That moment alone could have made the night unforgettable. But it was only the beginning.

Inside the theater, as Carrie performed, Mike was visibly moved. Her lyrics, her voice, they reached him deeply. And thanks to arrangements made by Mary Jo, Mike was able to meet Carrie face-to-face after the show.

Carrie welcomed him with such warmth and kindness, even signing his bookmark, “With love.” Mike could hardly believe it. On the drive home—and well into the next day—he kept repeating, “I can’t believe she took the time to meet someone like me. Artists don’t do that.” He talked about how she sang “straight to his heart.”

Joy: pure, unfiltered, and overflowing
