Sunshine Communities

Sunshine Communities Happiness Happens Here. In homes filled with dignity. In workplaces filled with opportunity. In a community that chooses opportunity.

Sunshine Communities, founded in 1950, supports men, women and children with intellectual and developmental disabilities, offering residential, vocational and recreational services. At Sunshine, each individual lives, works and plays on their terms. Our mission is to create community among people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, their families, friends and staff. We do this by offering services that enable all of us to build relationships through mutual caring and growth. Sunshine Communities offers life-enriching opportunities that celebrate and nurture each individual’s unique abilities, interests and dreams, allowing them to find their place in the community. We support individuals with IDD through our intermediate care facility, vocational center, supported living sites, family care homes, respite care, community recreation activities, employment assistance, and transportation services. • Vocational Center, offering an array of enrichment and employment opportunities
• Supported Living, providing supports within the individual’s home
• Family Care Homes, for community living opportunities
• Respite Care, short term stays to offer families a break

More than just a giveaway—it’s a movement. 💛

Our retail locations offer great gifts and a fun experience, but they are truly an extension of our mission to create community. Happiness happens here, and we are grateful to Charles E. Boyk Law Offices, LLC for helping us share that mission with others—especially this month.

When more people are included in service and leadership, communities become more connected and resilient.

Aktion Club (sponsored by Kiwanis International) is the only service club in the world specifically for adults living with disabilities. The program empowers members to build leadership skills while giving back through meaningful community service.

Our club is the first in Ohio hosted directly by a full-service developmental disability provider. Members learn, lead, and serve together while making a real impact.

Recent projects include:
• Packing backpacks with school supplies for local students
• Hosting fundraisers like lemonade stands and walking taco sales
• Donating blankets to local nonprofits
• Creating bracelets to support St. Jude Children's Research Hospital

Through activities like these, members build confidence, develop leadership skills, and form lasting friendships while serving their community.

Sunshine's chapter is sponsored by Oak Openings Kiwanis

The best way to understand Sunshine is to hear directly from the people who experience it every day:

“I started a job at Sunshine Communities hoping to make a difference, but the individuals I’ve worked with, along with the coworkers and incredible people I’ve met along the way, have inspired me in so many ways. Even through life’s challenges, we can find so much joy in the simple, everyday moments.”
