As we move into a period of very cold weather, it’s important to understand the alerts issued by the National Weather Service and what they mean for your safety.

Cold Weather Advisory:
A Cold Weather Advisory is issued when very cold temperatures and/or wind chills are expected. These conditions can lead to frostbite or hypothermia if proper precautions aren’t taken. Dress in layers, limit time outdoors, and check on vulnerable neighbors.

Extreme Cold Warning:
An Extreme Cold Warning is issued when dangerously cold temperatures and wind chills are expected. These conditions can cause frostbite or hypothermia in minutes. This is the time to take action, stay inside as much as possible and ensure pets and livestock are protected.

The map included shows the temperature and wind chill criteria for each area in our region.

Stay weather-aware and take steps to keep yourself, your family, and your animals safe during extreme cold.

As temperatures drop and winds pick up, remember that our pets and livestock feel the cold just like we do. Wind chill can be dangerous for animals, especially those left outdoors without proper shelter.

Here are a few ways to keep them safe in extreme cold:
✔️ Bring pets indoors during cold, windy conditions.
✔️ Provide livestock with adequate shelter, fresh water, and plenty of food.
✔️ Make sure outdoor pets have warm, dry, enclosed shelters and unfrozen water.
✔️ Wipe off paws after walks—salt and ice-melting chemicals can irritate their skin.
✔️ Check under and around your vehicle before starting it—animals may hide near engines for warmth.

As temperatures drop, it’s important to understand how wind can make cold weather feel even colder. Wind chill measures how quickly your body loses heat when exposed skin meets chilly, moving air.

Why it matters:
When winds pick up, they blow away the thin layer of warm air your body naturally creates, causing heat loss to happen much faster. This can quickly lead to frostbite or hypothermia, especially in very cold conditions.

Check out this chart to see how wind speed and temperature work together to affect wind chill values. Stay bundled up, cover exposed skin, and limit time outdoors during dangerously low wind chills!
