Dear Parents/Guardians of Patients,

I have heard from many of you asking what my thoughts and opinions are about school openings. I agree with the AAP approach to children going back to school in a safe manner. As a parent, I share many of your concerns and stress the importance of teaching our children the basics they need to keep themselves safe in public settings.
Based on the empirical data that I have seen, wearing a mask during a pandemic in schools in which children under 12 are not vaccinated should be considered. It is my professional recommendation that because of COVID-19 and it's Variants' high risk of transmission, I strongly suggest the following: Social distancing 3-6 feet in classroom, wearing a mask, and washing hands frequently.
Science dictates what we should follow during a pandemic, coupled with hospital bed shortages, and rise in children testing positive for Covid-19, calls for extra precautions.

Helpful Hints: In order to help your young children understand the length of time needed to wash their hands, a helpful tool is to have them sing Happy Birthday twice, (or Baby Shark) to help wash the proper amount of time. Please show your child how to wash between the digits, not just on the palms and backs of the hands.

Please know that as your child's/children's physician, I am here to answer your questions, and help guide you in making educated decisions.
